I think some people may have confused self harm as this fad amongst 'emo's it's really a serious problem. I believe it's an addiction and a disorder, everyone deals with stress differently and those who self harm it's their way of dealing with their stress. Either way each person is affected differently by it.

I don't think self-injury is necessarily a symptom of clinical depression, or a social/anxiety disorder or something along those lines. It is an addiction. Saying it's merely a symptom of something else would be the same as saying anorexia isn't a disorder in itself. It may be triggered by something else (the same way, per say, depression may lead to drinking), but I doubt it's not a disorder.

I may be wrong, but I simply don't find any logic in saying it's only a symptom.

Ann Willis: It's spelled "injure," "Injurer," and "injury."
And, a lot of people look down on self-injury in my community. I'm assuming she meant in her community, and others but not all, people look down on it. I think that's sort of an obvious.
She did use "hypocritical" incorrectly, though.

Ann Willis: Well, hell, can I go live in your community? because the people in my community frown upon self harm as much as they frown on homosexuality, and that's saying something considering I live in an extremely conservative community.

Your correct about her use of hypocritical however, but overall I think it was a good article.

Can we please STOP with the self-injury articles?

Or say something NEW, at least?

"Most people tend to be hypocritical about self-injury and not give a care to the people and their families who suffer from this disorder"

Who on earth would be insensitive to anyone who self injers? Every self injerer in my comunity that I know of has all ways been supported by those around them. People always want to do the right thing and helps someone who can't help them self.

And that's the wrong use of the word hypocritical. Hypocritical is when you say one thing and mean another, so unless the general public is all cutting they're not hypocritical.

Futher more, self injuring is NOT a disease. It's a symtom of depression. This article was laced with opinion, but good for you that you pointed out that emos arent' the only ones who injer them selves. Like I haven't read that half of a milion times on mibba. T_T not medical jounal worthy BUT I did see that you tried. While I don't think all your facts were correct it was an alright article.

I thought the Hawthorne Heights comment was really rude and un-needed.

Very insightful ^.^
As a recovering addict to self-injury, it's good to know that there's intelligent people out there who aren't all "oh, she's/he's emo". So, thank you.

It's a pretty nice article. I was going to write an article on self-injury, but I don't really have enough time. I guess if I do it little by little, I could write it.

Good article, but sadly, it's never going to stop while theres stereotypes out there pushing kids into believing this is what they need to do in order to fit in.
Emo is a bunch of crap, theres no such thing.

Great article! I think this is the very first 'cutting/self-injury' article that wasn't biased and completely without fact, and I very much enjoyed it. It was decently written, accurate, factual, and informative.

I dont really think autism is a 'brain disorder' similar to something depression.

And I think self injury is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

But I mean, other than that, this was good :)

That's well written...but it's saying I'm a self-injurer because I have a nail biting problem? And one thing I've learned is not all emos cut and not all cutters are emo, and I don't like how they always consider those two as the same...but all in all, good article!

This was written really well.
I could see this is a medical magazine, or something. ^-^;
I can understand what how the triggers affect people, because you named a few things that set me off.
All in all, a job well done. :]
