I have a very limited sense of smell. I can smell McDonald's a mile off. Yet when my mum says "phew, can you smell that?" I never can. There really isn't a lot I CAN smell. I really wish there was a way I could find out whether I do have a serious problem or whether its all in my head. I guess we'll never know.

Here's a link to an article i found on the internet. It gives A LOT of info on this subject; how our sense of smell works, hw smell disorders are caused, and even treatment and research being done.

Okay two things that some people have already pointed out- Carbon Monoxide has no smell and most people haven't had their house been on fire. And the article could have had more emphasis on the actual science behind it instead of just give examples on why not being able to smell is a problem.

"Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night to the scent of smoke, only to discover that your home was on fire? Most people all answer ‘yes’ to these simple questions..."

I didn't realize that was an experience most people have had. I feel all left out.

my brother has this, he's had it for a number of years. He once left the gas on the cooker on, luckilt i came home from school and spelt it before any thing could happen but it can be quite difficult. He had to drop out of college in his second year, he was trining to become an engineer for the army but he was said to be a risk because of him having no sense of smell. It sucks for you if you can't smell.

That was very interesting. I had no idea there was such a disorder, but that just shows how little known Congenital Anosmia is.

People always thought it was wierd that I couldn't smell because I have a normal sense of taste - I'd never heard of it being called this, I didn't realize I had an actual thing!

My friend has this. Another interesting point that goes with it is that people who cannot smell have a different sense of taste as well because taste and smell go together. So even if you ate the same thing they could describe the taste differently from someone who could smell.

I have no sense of smell, it's definitely a good thing when it comes to scooping supplements. My friends always make me scoop the strongoid CX. :P

The article was very well written, but if you want to make it somewhat more effective, you should also write a small portion on hyposmia: the confusion of smell.

v Agreed. Carbon monoxide is so dangerous because no one can smell it.

I hate to say this but carbon monoxide doesnt have a smell at all. Its colorless and odorless gas. It it wouldn't really matter if you can smell or not for that one; If you dont have a detector, your screwed either way.
