    It's economics. As long as there is a constant steady flow of goods and services, a country can continue to be prosperous. Rome was the leading world power, and as such was a center of commerce. This article does a lot to illustrate how important commerce, business, and the economy in general is to any nation, as it can directly affect the people who live in it.
