We use this exact book in my English 201 A class and we just went over that first chapter.
I highly suggest finding this book and looking through it, it's very helpful.

    Also:

Articles should not be treated like your story chapters, on Mibba. Do not just whip out whatever comes to mind and call it good. Write it out, then revise and edit it. Also, spell checkers are very useful. And make sure you have a clear thesis, towards the beginning of the article. It gets annoying when you have to read to the second to last paragraph to find out what the heck the article is talking about.

Another suggestion for a writing how-to manual: my dad the attorney swears by Strunk & White's "Elements of Style".

Yes, but their article about the Holocaust doesn't need to be so boring they put readers to sleep. They could still use exciting verbs and phrasing to inform and/or persuade people of their point without boring them to death.

I think that the last two points on Professor Trimble list are odd- there are subjects that can't be lighten up or talked to in a warm manner. I would personally find it annoying if someone tried to be witty in an article about terrorism or the Holocaust.

Thank-you, on behalf of myself when I was an amateur writer at 12.
This is a useful article, especially for beginners to writing. I actually think that this would be a great Sticky in the writing guidelines forums. Maybe you should talk to Dujo or a mod about it. ^^
