There are millions of people all over the globe who listen to my music and dress accordingly described as emo, and it's nice to see I'm not the only one taking offense. What happened to "depressed" or "gothic"? Much more conventional terms
damn my article sucks compared to this greatness. I wrote on the same exact subject but put it in lame-man's-words -_- well great job intriguing read on a intriguing subject.
helium vs oxygen, people who are dressing that way don't usually engage in self harm. Those people want to hide themselves from attention, and these days the people in black eyeliner want to expose themselves.
this article describes emo the way I see it in my head everyday when it's used. I hate these article saying 'we dress this way to express ourselves and you are just trying to cut us down'...bullshit, these kids love this sort of attention, and it's not expression of self, it's actually following another trend. if you dress that way, i don't care. some of your clothing is cute and I want to steal it from you, but if you are a huge poser and show off about how it's not fair that your being labeled this, then your just being pathetic!
I LOVE this article! write more, because your agressive writing style works for stuff like this...
okay. emo is an abbreviation for the word emotional. it is an awful adjective but Americans need a way to categorize people and label them. there are so many different kinds of people and ethnicities that people need an explanation of what people are, how they act, and how they look, emo is not a word but part of a word. it means you are emotional in how you act and look inside your body. self harm is an awful reality and goes against God(for those of you who believe) and the fact that God made you in his glory not your self harming. emotional people do emotional things including self harm. ignorant bigot headed people have put into their brains that teenagers are 'emo' because of how they look. that is not the case. emo is a label that is used way to much and in very wrong contexts.
"Emo" first entered the language as an abbreviation for "Emotive Hardcore". The purist hardcore kids thought this "new" hardcore with softer riffs and "emotionally" based lyrics wasn't hardcore enough to be hardcore (haha, so to speak) and so labelled what they saw as fans of an inferior insult to their genre as "Emo".
I can't explain how that negative label from the 80s came to be applied to what's understood as an "Emo" kid today, because it's a world of difference. But basically it is a word that exists - or has at the very least existed as an abbreviation - even if I strongly believe it's being misused today.
haha lol! i love this article! it's so true! I love alot of punk rock bands and I listen to my music openly and I'm sick and tired of being called emo!
i love this article, mainly because ur saying how people use the term emo to look down on other people and the term is pointless, i hate it when people just say i hate hate emos and think they're making a point.
To me emo doesn't really exist
but Punks do, even tho i hate labels, Emo is a subgenre of punk, there more emotional then normal punks. theres a history on it
Emo doesn't (originally) come from emotional.
But those words have to do with each other nowadays.
First emo band was Rites of Spring, which is NOTHING like Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance nowadays.
Emo used to be hardcore with emotional, poetic lyrics.
Emo has injected a lot of especially lyric-wise creativity in music in general.
I'd say we all just ignore people who use labels to label people. There's not really anything wrong with labeling music to my opinion, because Andrea Bocelli and Avenged Sevenfold are quite different. And how else would you explain the difference in a quick way? ;]
Great job, i totally agree with what you're saying!
I hate the way society has classified 'emo' as like a subculture of society, outcasts wearing piles of eyeliner, skinny jeans the usual cliche. It doesn't really exist, only to those who choose to keep it alive by calling/labelling others 'emo' or following the so-called fashion trend started behind the term a few years ago.
People need to get over it, understand and take people for who they are, without judgement. You're right 'emo' isn't and should not be a real word, anyone who uses it:update your vocabulary!!!
