Thank you for this. I have always wanted to know what it was like to be in a mosh pit and this helped a lot. I still plan on trying it a some point but I'm not petite (sp?) and my ass will be wearing lace up combat boots. lol
    Great Article.
    R.I.P to those who passed.

The girl who passed at the BDO was actually a family friend of mine. Although I was young at the time, it still sticks to my mind a lot and that's why I make sure to look after others in moshpits.

Very well written. I have some comments...
The shoe thing is true. I wore slip-on Vans at my first show...BIG mistake. Laces, people, laces. And that's not true about festivals. At the Bamboozle, which is tens of thousands of people, we helped each other out. There is, I think, a decent amount of respect in the mosh...although some people go too far...my friend had some random guy with his hands on her waist...she didn't mind because he was hot. I followed rules before I knew there were any. Moshing is awesome...banning would be lame. People just need to be careful....

RIP to those who passed for a good show.

    Well written article :]

People should know not to get TOO intense, though. Plus, if you're too tiny or too frail to be in a pit, DON'T GO NEAR THEM. There are signs at Warped Tour that warn people they're going enter an area where there will be pits and that they will most likely get hurt. And it also depends on the band. A mosh pit for, oh say, Bayside is probably going to be a lot less intense than a Drop Dead, Gorgeous or Bring Me The Horizon mosh pit [trust me, I've been in a DDG pit.]

People just need to watch out. Choose your mosh pits carefully.

A lot of venues too post signs that say "no moshing, crowd-surfing" and stuff, but nobody follows them.

I've been in mosh pits, they are dangerous. in fact, at 2 separate shows I was almost trampled. I say now that it was awesome, but it's really scary when you're on the ground, and people don't help you up for a bit. The firrst show I was at, I was almost down for a few minutes until FINALLY someone pulled me up. Then at the second one, a huge group of myself, my friend, and aout 20 others fell over. God forbid the band stopped playing and said to help us, but it was quick fall and get up, but I was the last one to get up. I was flat on my ass too.

Moshing is dangerous, yes. I don't mind them though, because I'm not a small person. In fact, I'm going to a concert where I have pit tickets in 4 days. IT's nothing like MCR where it's full of 14 year olds, this is basically a real rock concert that won't be full of 14 year old girls. I'm little nervous, but excited.

Don't blame the bands for the pit. I am a mosher.
And can I just say, the worst injury I have ever gotten from a pit was at a Paramore concert. I got elbowed to the face. And that hurts like a bitch.( Yeah, a Paramore.)

I don't really think all the blame should go onto the audience, although they are the ones moshing, but that's basically a custom at shows...it's just how things are handled with the venue and the band as well, because they can't just let the crowd go insane and then not stop if it gets too rough or have just a big pit with no barricades and security.

lol, trust me...when you're in the middle of a pit all you want to do it get to the front. That's why at bdo so many got hurt because it was limp bizkit and a huge crowd surge happened. idk

Band should never be blamed for pits. Sure, some bands say "open up the pits!" signaling for one to start, but most of the time it's the crowd that starts it. If they don't want to get hurt, they shouldn't start one. Generally now the front, back and sides are the safest spots to be if one doesn't want to be apart of a pit. The middle is where it all is. I don't think mosh pits start because everyone is trying to get to the front anymore. Haha.
My whole point is, bands shouldn't get blamed. It's not their fault it started.

I saw the documentary for the 2001 BDO the other week, the footage of the pit for both At The Drive In and Limp Biskit was horrible
we can all place blame, and everyone's opinions are going to be different, but I think in that case it was definately the audiences own fault
not only did At The Drive In tell them all on different occasions to stop what they were doing, and also to protect each other from what was happening and walk off stage because of it
but a couple of hours later, Limp Biskit had to take breaks after every song and tell the audience to stop what they were doing because it was getting out of hand.
You would definately think people would listen, especially at such a big venue and with such a high risk of getting incredibly injured.

i like how this article points out that we're to blame, because we, as the audience are to blame...we're the ones that get too hyped and just into the show that it has to be let out some how.....though i do love how some artists are big on helping out their fans....my favorite being mcr, if it gets crazy and people fall down gerard stops and makes sure everyone's alright before he continues the show...he tells you to help every one up too.....it's quite scary being on the ground, flat on your back, people falling on top of you and not sure if you can get up or not, let alone the feet by your head are still moving......i rather liked this article.

The last part about lace up shoes..I wish i'd tied mine up
beforehand. I actually had to walk to the train station with
only one shoe, catch the train and then walk home still with
only one shoe. I was not impressed that someone hid/stole/took
    my shoe >.<

Oh, and I think it's the audience who is to blame - we're the ones who start it.

I have to agree when it's said that moshing is dangerous. The whole etiquette thing is very true though, especially when it comes to girls falling down. I know that from experience, like one concert i went to got a bit out of control, i got caught up in the moshpit without wanting to, and I'm quite small so i got knocked over really easily, and i almost wasn't noticed until one guy had enough sense to knock the rest of the idiots out of the way and pick me up. Luckily for me i wasn't too hurt but it really does show that it can get very overwhelming at times.

I'm not for banning moshing, just toning it down.
