This is actually a thing that has started where I'm from. I'm not sure if it's law enforced or not but it's freakin' annoying. Although, it's only if the people look under 25, similar to the rules already applied when selling alcohol.

This happened to me!
I was 21 and I'm allowed to buy anything I like, my fiance was 25 at the time and was with me. We'd bought a full weeks worth of shopping, a few cans of beer for him & a bottle of wine for myself and for a friend for a christmas gift.

I was asked for ID which Im used to so I showed her mine then she asked my fiance, he's never been IDed in his life, he looks older than he is. When he was 14 he needed ID to prove he could still get a childs ticket on the bus!

When we said he didnt have any the woman refused to sell us the alchol because he might be underage and I might be giving it to him!

I was annoyed and told her to pick her food shopping up her arse...this was in Asda. Thankfully it's never happened again.

i find this amusing...who would be stupid enough to go withh a minor, get the alcohol, and hand it to them right then and there? wow...in my opinion its bull...people will give minors alcohol even with that rule.

Tesco =D
I have to take my ID there to buy things, and my brother is the manager for christs sake. He knows my age but apparently to the gus at the till, 'it just isnt good enough'. But, to be honest, the people who work at tesco aren't the smartest on the planet. x]

I can understand why the cashier did this, but maybe have some common sense about the issue next time. Upon glancing you can tell these two women are related. Put two & two together. Seems a little logical?

I think it's a good idea to have to show ID and stuff.

Of course, I'm on my way into the legal business myself.

This happened to me once, at a Wal-Mart. I mean, they let my dad buy the alcohol but they asked for my ID, and I didn't have it.

It was ridiculous, though. I mean, if the person shows a legit ID to the store, once the alcohol is sold, then isn't it no longer the store's responsibility what happens to it afterwards? Something happened at the grocery store I work in recently and that's what the manager said after we called him...

That's just plain stupid and nothing else.

I mean, how the fuck would they know if the mum would, or would not, give the alcohol to her girl?

And, this might sound harsh, but is this at all the store's problem, whether adults give their under-age kids alcohol?

Thats stupid, but in fairness, my mum works on the checkouts at Tesco. She's seen people get violent when they've not been able to produce ID and been threatend.

In someways it's for the safety of staff and the customers but in others, her mum was right with her and has the right to buy it, besides, who ever said it was forher daughter

I work in asda and I know that we question 25. If you look younger than this age your asked for ID. That's fair enough because most people will dig out their ID and it doesn't matter if they have a child with them or not. As long as they aren't physically seen giving the child the alcohol or even letting them pick it out or carry it around the store.

But kids don't drink wine. It's cheap stuff.

We used to buy alcohol all the time - and only one of my friends was legal, and she didn't look it! This is ridiculous.

that's bullshit, I'm underage - 17 - and I always go with my mum to the bottle-o and liquor land. I know I'm an Aussie and the age is 18 here but the point is my mum doesn sometimes give me alcohol coz she knows I will drink responsibly, but I hate wine - most younger people do! It's stupid, and the company is being silly. i work at a Foodland (supermarket like Woolworths, or Coles) and I can sell smokes to an adult if their kids are there! STUPID!!

Yeah, I agree with take.my.hand

It's part of our training at Tesco's to check ID and not sell alcohol unless all ID's are shown, unless the child is like, 7 or something. Because otherwise it could be some randomer an under age person asked to pose as their parent.

It's not the checkout person fault when it happens, we could get fired and fined and have something put on a criminal record if we don't do it properly. It really sucks.

So yeah, not pointless. I'd rather ask for ID for some one's daughter than get fined and fired. Though... I have to ask permission to sell alcohol anyway, being underage and all.
