The best love story I have ever read is The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenger. This book is incredible! It's about how love can exist forever outside of the constraints of time and space. The best gangster crime fiction author is Donald E. Westlake he also goes by the name of Richard Stark. 361 by Westlake is a great novel about the mafia. Go to hardcasecrime.com to find other dark crime novels.
The Good Fairies of New York. Fairies come to New York from Scotland/Ireland/other places, and two of them play Ramones songs on their fiddles. It's really weird.
13 Little Blue Enevelopes by Maureen Johnson. A girl gets a package from her dead aunt and she has to follow all of the things each envelope says. It takes her all across Europe.
"The Book of Lost Things" is really good. It's by John Connolly (sp?). It's neither romantic or crime, but it's very good. It's about a boy (growing up in WWII, I think). His mother dies, his father gets remarried and has a child. Then he starts having these episode in which he blacks out and have very vibrant 'dreams.' Eventually he ends up in another world (though he's probably having a very long episode) in search of his dead mother. It's like his really warped version of all books and fairytales, merged into this book. I'm not explaining it well, but it's a really good read.
I guess you could find a better summary on Wikipedia or at BN.com.
