I would never bring a seven or eight year old to a rated R movie. They're really much too young. Plus most kids that age are just plain annoying when you take them to movies.
It definitely was bad for the parents to bring their kids to see Watchmen. At seven, that's just too young to see Watchmen - especially considering the amount of violence and gore and sex AND Dr.Manhattan walking around completely nude.
Also, it's annoying to the other moviegoers. It's an R rated movie so you expect no little rugrats to be running around the theater. Ugh!
I was watching movies with my parents that were far worse than Watchmen when I was younger than those kids. The first movie I ever remember seeing involved a stripper having sex with a guy in a hotel bathroom, and then dying because he accidentally impaled her neck with one of those towel hooks when she was pushed back against it...so, needless to say, my parents didn't really think much in the way of, "Maybe we shouldn't let our kid watch this with us..."
I turned out pretty well. However...it should be left up to the parents, anyway. It's the same deal with that book-ban that was always going on when the Harry Potter books were at the peak of their popularity. I wrote into the news about it and was featured, and basically said, "No, I personally don't understand why parents think that their children should not read these books...but at the same time, it really is up to the parent to decide what their child(ren) should be exposed to. We can give our opinion on what we would like them to adhere to in terms of what they should see and read, but at the time it is not our job, or our right, to tell parents, 'No, your child isn't allowed to view that.'"
I've been allowed to watch R-rated movies and things that contained sex since I can remember. Ripped away my innocence :file: I personally wouldn't allow my kids to see an R-rated movie until they were older. 7 is way too young to see something like that.
