This related greatly to 'the starving artist theory'. I myself am going to PRATT in New York for Fine Arts and Illustration. And I completely understand what you're feeling. Art may not give you a constant income. But would you rather be sitting at a desk doing someone else's slave paper work? I know I wouldn't. The thing about writing and art, is that they are both passions. But at the same time, both of these things depend on the writers inspiration, skill, passion, and ideas. It's not like we have ideas flowing every moment of the day. Things just have to come to you. This is why it's so hard to make a living off of writing. Writers can have writers block for months, even years before they find that one little thing that completely sparks them inside again. And then that one great idea (even though it may have taken a year of misery to come to you) can pay off in big ways. One great idea that may have taken longer, will earn you more than a bunch of crappy little ideas that only took you a few days. I don't know if that makes any sense to you or not. But yes, being a writer, as just like being an artist, is indeed worth it.

*hugs* I have a spending problem too!! I spent £300 in one swoop the other day...on clothes I didn't need...and a piercing I probably shouldn't have got. Ooopsie.

Don't worry too much at the moment love about getting money for writing, or getting money in any other way. I know that it's nice to buy new things (like I said, I have very much a similar problem to you) but you're still young. You don't need a career right now.

My advice to you, my lovely coffeeshop buddy (even if you don't work in a coffee shop anymore), is to go to school and have fun whilst you still can. If you can get a job on the side of school then whoop. But don't stress too much about it. = )

Love you sweetie, and you know that I'm here if you want to rant =D <3 x

I think a writer, as an artist, is always bound to be, you know, suffering. A real, professional writer, in so many cases, even if he/she gets to publish is unlikely to ever acquire financial prosperity. Stability, maybe. But it's never, ever a given.

Oh, dear. How I hate to say that I've been here. It's so damn difficult for me to say that I was where you are, and am not anymore, because writing has taken such a back seat in my dreams, and it saddens me. I think one day, I just got tired of the typing you were talking about, I felt like I was getting my fingers clenched and painful for nothing. I think there came a moment when I realized that I can't obsess my entire life over that blasted contract. That I can't spend my life envying every guy or gal who's published something. The problem is, that, unvoluntarily, the dream went up a notch, and not only do I need to hope for a contract, I need to kick and scream just to get into the university of my dreams...

but you, my dear, I think you're gonna make it.

Yea writers hardly get any money :\
But why can't you just do do it as a hobby? And get another job because then you might enjoy it more when you aren't working to a deadline.

Indeed, it is easy to say writing is worth it, that you shouldn't write for money, that you should write for you, etc. when you do it as a hobby. But when you throw in financial fixes, that makes it tough. It changes it from a hobby to reality, where money does in deed matter.

:/ I'm sorry you have to deal with this.

Yes, being a write is worth it. I didn't read much but I don't think it is about the money. If it was, only people who could write would be rich. :? That didn't make sense. We write because we want to. Not because we want money, I mean, sure! It would be great to get money from something we love doing, but that isn't the main reason writers get published. They get published so people can read thier books, and so their work gets fairly recognised. :)

Thank you, asteroid. I was indeed speaking about it as a career choice. Seeing as how I am now not only paying cellphone bills and creditcards, but also rent, groceries and university tuitions, it's become an issue for me.

It's disappointing when people don't read through an entire entry before they make a conclusion. This journal entry was made in an attempt to disect my emotions and struggles. It just happens to stem from my financial problems. I'm just looking for a little help...

Shazam., I think she meant writing as a career. Like, people who do it for a living. On here, we don't have to worry about money. But when our lives run on the income that our writing earns... Indeed, it would be a struggle.
