To answer your question: I would roll my eyes and click away if the main character was very cliche. ie: wears all black and gets picked on in school for no reason by the jocks and cheerleaders, is abused and hates their parents, etc. That right there is a huge cliche that a lot of people hate. And I'd be turned off if it just wasn't portrayed right. Not everyone who self-injures has a terrible life. I've dealt with it before and my life isn't terrible at all. The chemical imbalance thing would work, but I'd make sure that you do some research on it before writing about it. I don't think anybody on Mibba would think, "oh the main character is so emo." At least, not all. They (like myself) would care if it was realistic and believeable, and if they could relate to it. I like these types of stories, but only if they're well-written.
