Use of Foreign Phrases in Writing - Comments

I don't like when authors do that... I can't follow it then and I'm not about to go off and translate a story just so I can understand it - whether it be something I find online or a real book. When they put the translation right there or in the narration or something, it's slightly better, but I still zone out when I see a foreign language I don't know.

I don't mind it at all. If that's the way a character speaks, then that's simply the way the character speaks. Usually, when I see that, the author includes a translation in their author's note so that the reader doesn't get lost, AND what was said is "explained" in the narration - maybe not a word-for-word translations, but the context clues left in the narration is enough to let the reader know what's going on.
