My boyfriend is severely bipolar. Sometimes when he's upset he'll call and tell me a random story. Like, a Welsh story usually (because he's from Wales).
Maybe tell him a story? A real life one, a made up one...you're on here, so you must be at least a little creative.
It could help get his mind off of things for a little.

    It depends on the problem.

Tell him that you'll always be there for him through everything. Comfort him and ask him about the particular problems. Try not to gush with I love you, I love you. Say that when your phone conversation is over and you're both saying good bye.

It's much easier to make someone feel better if you're there, especially when you're not very confident with making the person feel better through words. Just show him that you care in whatever way you can and for the love of god do not say, "And how does that make you feel?"

One time my best friend was sad because she has a rough life. I told her this, "What would you do if you were walking and a rabbit stepped in front of you and threw a pineapple at your head?"

It made her laugh, and overall feel better. :)

It'd be helpful if we knew what was troubling him, but you should definitely not be all "I love you" about it. Of course you love him. Show him, then. Most guys like someone to simply be there, not love on them like some girls like.

So just listen to him. Have him talk about his troubles, and then give him solutions. Men like to fix things. So give him ways he might be able to do so, but at the same time, be sensitive and attentive.

Like I said, don't crowd him with "I love you" and gushy crap. Just be gentle and ambitious about his situation. Good luck.

Whenever my friends are down I gather up all my House DVD's(or whatever they like to watch with me), and then have a sleep over watching them all night.
We also would go out to the park or the mall and just chill, and tell eachother stories that make us laugh.

    Hope that is some help.

When one of my friends is feeling down, I hug them and tell them everything will be alright. Since you're on the phone though; just be sure to remind him that you'll be there for him. Try to joke around or brighten his mood in some way. For my sister, I always tell her that you just have to let life move forward and keep your chin up, despite the negative. <3

Kinda depends on the problem, but I would just let him vent, you know let him spill it all out to get it off his chest. And if you can think of any kind of advice for his problem just throw it out there. That's pretty much the best I can do.
