Huh...I thought it was German also, and I'm pretty sure it is.
I think I learned somewhere that English is derived from this language and out of the other Romance languages, the sound and speech comes closest.

    For example:

    Guten Morgen: Good Morning

    Sohn: Son
    Bruder: Brother
    Onkel: Uncle

    Mein/Meine: Mine (masculine/feminine forms)

    Braun: Brown
    Weiß: White

Uh, sorry about the odd selection of cognates...It has been a while since I last took German. XD

A lot of languages have Latin roots. Like... really. It's redonkulous how much you can understand by staring at random Latin words. Dx

I think French is a decent closeness to English.. except for the insaneness of all the rules and exceptions. I live in a French city but I'm English. There are a lot of similarities.

French is actually pretty similar to Spanish which can be similar to English with certain words.

Alot of our words come from Latin roots though so I figure Latin perhaps?

That got me thinking, so I went to google and looked it up. XD Found on wikipedia that Low German is the one that most resembles modern English.

I'm not sure what it was, but the reason you can hear English words in German speech is because a lot of languages in the western world have roots in the same languages, often Latin or sometimes Greek. Different parts of the world have languages with different roots; most Asian languages have the same roots, a lot of languages in the Middle East have the same roots, and a lot of languages in the western world--Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, English, etc--have primarily Latin roots.
