Did you know that basically all classic literature is fanfiction? It's only really in recent history that being original became cool. Way back in the medieval times, there was a crap ton of fanfiction about King Arthur. That was the big thing to do. Stuff like that went on for 100s of years until it became uncool or whatever.

I am a bit more of a Fanfiction writer, but I also like Original stories. Like you said, you have creative freedom with writing original fiction, but it's easier to lose inspiration rather quickly because of all the hard work that goes into the creative process.

As for Fanfiction, it is a lot easier to write than Original Fiction because you're basically using premade characters in a premade world (IE: Harry Potter, Twilight, POTC, LOTR, etc), but there are also a lot of restrictions that come with writing Fanfics because you have to keep the characters in character the best you can and if you do make the premade characters slip up, you have to explain the action behind it. And it's often hard to try and make OCs that belong to that world. XD It's also hard to avoid making those hated/feared Mary Sues and Gary Stus.

I tend to write fanfics for Thundercats a lot and I almost always stick with it. I write Thundercats Fanfiction because I just like exploring the premade characters of that world and seeing the world through their eyes. :)

I read Naruto! But I think I'm way behind at the moment.

Anyway, nicely said about Fan-Fiction, I agree :D
Thanks for telling me your opinion!

Personally I like them, both like I enjoy writing Naruto Fan-Fiction because I don't necessarily like the way the manga has been going on certain parts, but since I'm not sure of rather or not you're into Naruto I won't bore you with the details.

I like writing original fiction because, well its awesome, I mean I can make up whatever a want and no matter how crazy it is, I can still do it.

I don't really see Fan-fiction as a safe zone, because if other fans of the show, book or movie etc. read your story they may not like your story because A) its a fan-fiction B) its hard to keep the characters in character and change the story line at the same time, but it all depends on what kind of fan-fiction writer you are. I mean sure people can say that most of the work has already been done for you, therefore you really have no imagination, but it takes a lot of imagination be able to change a pre-written story line and keep it a decent story too and sometimes your story line might actually be better than the original.

However in the end I think they are both great.
