I think there needs to be stricter guns laws too...but the thing is...there are always under the table deals so people can get guns.

And a mental health exam (though I strongly strongly agree that needs to happen and I think it's actually supposed to in some states before buying guns...) won't always show everything. A person can be "fine" and not show anything wrong with them in an exam and just...snap.

My point is that there's probably a correlation between stricter gun laws and lower gun crime statistics, even wiyth guns being available on the black market.

I don't see how that's relevant to what I said, but okay.

We have pretty strict gun laws in Britain, and while there is a black market, we still don't have things like this happening. Apart from the occasional psychopath but that happens very rarely and never in a school.
I've grown up in the gun crime capital of the country, and even our gun violence is restricted to certain very rough areas, and predominantly between gangs.

Unfortunately, contacting our Representatives may not do too much in this case. A majority of our House is unfortunately Republicans who tend to be very pro-gun. The Republicans will block any gun laws that tries to get through. They'll shove the Second Amendment in everyone's faces and refuse to listen to anyone, not even the citizens that they should be listening to. Our politicians are part of the problem. It's partly greed. Guns bring in lots of money, the NRA will lobby against anti-gun activists. Our politicians are crooked, many of them will care more about their fucking money than they will the safety of citizens.

Maybe I'm stereotyping, but I assume anti-gun activism is going to be pretty hard to accomplish in the South, won't it? It'll be fairly easy here in California, most of this State is anti-gun already anyway. If you do get into activism, I wish you luck. Make sure you keep yourself safe if you get into street protests. ^^

@ Airi, there really aren't any kind words for a lot of the policies of the U.S. But the only way people are going to change things is through activism and contact with representatives. Both are things that I've been meaning to do.

@Fandango, I'm sure that just about anywhere, it wouldn't be difficult to buy weapons on the black market. This is essentially why I'm saying to make it harder, not impossible. Everyone has a right to defend themselves, which is why people that aren't psychologically incapable of having a gun shouldn't have their guns taken away.

Like I noted in my original statement, I live in the south. Guns are part of my culture, despite my mother never having them in the house.

And I thank you all for commenting. This being my first blog post, I wasn't sure what to expect, and I assumed all I was going to get was "You dirty liberal, GTFO out of our state" like I got during the election season on Facebook... Thank you for proving that wrong, as I'm getting tired of trying to avoid my "friends" commenting with some uneducated answer on anything that I write with political motivation.

I hate to be that person that says, "Guns don't kill people, people kill people", but if a person is psychotic enough to go on a rampage like this, there is probably little that will stop them. Black market weaponry is just as easily, if not easier, to obtain than legal weapons.

That being said, I obviously agree with stricter gun laws. That goes without saying even if there wasn't such horrific gun violence. I guess I'm on the fence about this /shrug

A good portion of Americans simply don't care, they adamantly refuse to admit or believe our ridiculous gun laws are a problem that needs to be fixed. Our laws need to be changed. They need to be strengthened. They need to be stricter. In certain States, guns are handed out like freaking candy almost. It's ridiculous. Unfortunately, knowing our country, this massacre will change nothing. Americans will remain ignorant. It's just what this country does. We won't change. I have no faith in this country.

This country is just.... There are no kind words for what this country is when it comes to gun control.

@little motorkitty; Thank you for your input. I probably could get one, even with stricter laws, but I still probably wouldn't. And I saw something a Facebook earlier today, that I think I probably should have shared. There was a picture of a gun saying how easy it was to get high powered fire arms in the U.S., and following it up with a statistic (that I'm not sure about because I really haven't done enough research) that said "2.98 per every 100,000 people" die because of gun violence. Then it noted that Australia has much stricter gun laws and only .01 per every 100,000 people die of gun violence. Once again, I don't know how accurate/true the statistics are, but I don't get how politicians haven't made policy off of the numbers of it, yet.

I've got to agree. I mean, if mentally ill people wouldn't be allowed guns I wouldn't get one and I'm quite happy with that. Stricter gun control would help stop gun violence, I don't see how people can't see that.
