Sorry, I should have made it more clear. I meant minor characters, that are just there but don't have any real purpose. They are either there for the main character to whine at or to push the two main characters together if it's a romance. In most stories, the main character/s are pretty well-developed, but it's when the minor characters aren't. For example, the minor characters in Harry Potter, such as Luna, Nevile, Fred and George are 3D characters because they all have goals and ambitious, things they are good at and bad at. They actually have a purpose. Another example, in Twilight, all though all of the vampires are well written, Bella's human friends. I mean, she knows those people for know years, surly she'll learn more then the fact that one or two of the guys have chrushes on her? It's just more about neglecting the minor characters because they aren't a big part of the story. I hope that cleared it up a little bit :)

Oh ok, I thought you were talking about the stuff on here (mostly cause of the part about the blurbs). :P
Also, just to add my thoughts, another big difference to me is that fan fiction is subjected to much more criticism regarding the same flaws that can be found in any story around here, while a lot of people seem to act like original can do no wrong in comparison.
But yeah, when people are actually getting paid, you expect better than that; I agree.

Alright. I have to ask. What exactly fo you mean by "2D characters"? Is it a character that one barely expands upon if at all? Or is it a character that, while is expanded upon, I not the main character or one of the main characters? Or is it something I haven't listed?

I just wanna say, every story has a cliche. Pretty much everything has some type of cliche to it.

Oooh, thank you for the recommendation. I've been looking for a good book to read. I make sure to keep and eye out for it next time I'm in town. I brought one recently, which is called Hard Lessons, which is four short stories. I'm on the second one at the moment, and although they are sort and seem somewhat rushed because of it, I felt the first story was very good. Like my third point, neither of the MC are too masculine or feminine and the anticipation builds up nicely between them. I personally loved the ending, even if it was short.
Thanks again for the recommendation though :)

Not a problem. Because there's always been a fanfic vs original debate when it comes to stories posted on Mibba, that's what I think everyone thinks of when someone says original fiction. No fault of yours for that. I mainly rely on reviews from others when it comes to published novels for that reason. I actually found an LGBT book (since you mentioned you read some of those) that way I thoroughly enjoyed. It doesn't at all fit what you described in your third point if you want to check it out. It's called The Swimming Pool Library by Alan Hollinghurst, if you haven't already heard of it. It's a little dramatic at points, I'll give it that, but it's definitely different in its themes so I found it quite wonderful overall.

    Thank you! :)
Honestly though, I don't see the point in posting a blog if you don't want to engage people, and then criticizing those people's options. I always worry about accidentally insulting/offending people when I post a blog like this!
Your options are welcome though, I love hearing others peoples options and such.

I know, my mistake! I thought because I wrote original, people would amuse I meant published too. I totally agree with you there though. That's what really irks me. You have money to spend on a decent book, but have to shuffle through all the novice stuff too. If I wanted that sort of stuff, I'd just surf the internet for it.

Holy crap. You're so polite and you make other opinions seem welcome. And you're not hostile nor snarky and you seem so nice. Thank you for actually being kind and such. I feel like that isn't appreciated enough in blogs around here. I mean all of that. Thank you for being nice.

You didn't specifically state you meant published novels and I assumed you meant on here so I apologise. It is a bit annoying when you find published books that aren't as high quality as you would expect from a published author, but if publishers think they'll make money off it, that's really all that matters sadly.

I can get what mia is saying, but like I said to him/her, it annoys me more because people are making money off of it, (i should have made it clear I was on about published stories). The question is one of the things I hate most about them, like I said, if I see that in a story, immediately I put it back on the shelf.

Yeeeaaah. Personally I find these things in both original and fan fiction. Speaking of; just recently I read the story that was fan fiction and the MC's parents were dead and it seemed a vague attempt to garner pity. Said story also had a few of the other "cliches" listed here. So I don't think that list is exclusive to original.

Fair enough, and that is true, you can find these in fanfictions too, but I find these particularly annoying in published original stories because people are making money off of it for something that seems so unoriginal. I agree with the quality too, if it is really well written, I will read it (apart from the questions in blurb - not happening). I've read Tin Star, a GLTB story that had a masculine, feminine character but it was so interesting and the blurb was so convincing I read it anyway. It just really irks me XD

I agree with mia; these can apply to any genre of story.

But A-fucking-men to #1. Everytime I see something like that, especially if it's in a cliched story, I'm always like "no shit they're going to get together -_-" or whatever answers the question. I also think that when you have to ask questions like that, it really sounds like you're questioning the intelligence of your readers, in a way that you have to talk down to them like you're hyping up a small child.

I feel like everything you listed isn't exclusive to original fictions and I find all those things a lot in fanfics as well. These things are more about the quality of writing in a story than what type of story it is in my opinion.
