DAMN STRAIGHT. Yesterday when I cleared up some concepts about feminism to a friend, he remarked, "Well, at least you're not one of those crazy feminists." It disturbed me, especially since I just repeated what feminists have been talking about ALL THIS TIME. Seriously, is that really what everyone else thinks, that if you say you're a feminist, people automatically assume you're crazy? Is fighting for your rights crazy? It certainly is for many people, apparently.

@namewaslareadytaken - You are definitely right about there being no quick or easy solution. I think it's going to continue to take years of activism and diligence for anything to change. But I remain hopeful that it will!

@pelican park. - I do agree on some points of your comment, but I don't think all feminists should be "crazy" or "psycho" BECAUSE nothing else seems to work. Going to the extremes isn't necessarily a good thing, either, it might turn even more people away from feminism. And like I mentioned before, the media loves to hone on those extremists, and then give all feminists a bad name.
Well, idk, that's jut my opinion. Sometimes, we must have patience; it might not work now, but I'm sure in the future we all will get equal rights regardless of gender (or race or ethnicity.)
In any case, it's quite hard to stop some people from being sexist. Whatever laws that we do manage to put into place can not stop how people think; heck, there are still racist people today even if racists actions are generally illegal. Integrating such changes will be quite difficult, so don't expect or come wanting quick change, because I don't think that's possible, not with the state the country is in right now... -__-
Well, that's basically why I think being "crazy" or "psycho" doesn't work so well.
But idk. It might also be a good thing in spreading the word around...
Well, there's obviously no one right answer or else the problem would have been more easily dealt with already. >.>

@Stupidly Native - of course a boy can be a feminist. anyone that strives for equal rights for women is a feminist. however, boys need to be careful in how they navigate the world of feminism.

    @pelican park - EXACTLY.

@namewasalreadytaken - the media is a huge reason as to why feminism is viewed so negatively. from brith, we are shown images of weak and submissive women being the ideal, and anything that deviates from that "norm" is undesirable.

@dru;s not growing up - I will not go into much detail here about it, but I do know that trans* women themselves have said some very problematic things concerning feminism and "womanhood" and that is why some feminists find issues with them (myself not included).

thank you all for the awesome comments and support!

What on earth is so wrong about being a feminist? Like if a woman is ashamed of trying defend her rights, then I don't really think she cares all that much. Like I'll proudly wear a neon sign above my head that says that I'm a feminist because since the beginning of freaking time, we have been oppressed and coming from a religion that has a terrible (and yet untrue) reputation for oppressing women, I have a lot to defend. Patriarchy is bitch and I honestly think feminists should be "crazy" and "psycho" because it seems that nothing else works.

    Well said.

Personally, I'm all for equal rights between genders.
And yes, I'm a male. I'm sure you already know that, though. lol
But it seems that the media (Actually, not just the media) loves to hone in on the extremists, and then label everyone as such, thus brainwashing us into thinking such terms are derogatory.

I mean, yes, there are some rather extreme feminists out there, but that doesn't mean all feminists are extreme, or that all feminists, as you put it, "are "crazy" and "psycho" and "dangerous".

And that doesn't just go for feminism, either. But i won't go into that because that's not related anymore.

Anyway, good job. I applaud your courage in declaring this. :P

Some people do not identify as feminists because the feminist movement has not always been welcoming of women of color or trans* women (still isn't, always).

I tend to ask people why they don't identify as feminists rather than assuming things. Some people prefer to identify as an equalist because they don't agree with the mistakes of the feminist movement.

(I am a feminist, but as someone who understand the way some feminist treat trans* women, I would certainly understand why they might not want to identify as one of us.)

Why should feminist be a derogatory term? if you are prepared to stand up for equal rights then no one should try and stop you! Whoever even started saying being a feminist was bad anyway? Feminists believe in equality, not world domination!

I don't understand why men and women alike want to hide from the word. I am a feminist. I am a proud feminist and I love being called one. Everyone should be one or at least accept one for it means you believe in equal rights and opportunities for all people. Regardless of race, gender identification, age, and/or sexuality. Sadly, media only wants to shed light on the "femtremest" who see things a bit one sided.

Oops. Hah, sorry I went on a bit of a rant.

Yes, exactly. I despise how feminism has made by the media and society to be looked as a bunch of man-hating women who want to take all the rights from the menz for themselves.

Facepalm It's not an insult. Being a feminist is not an insult is not degrading is not a bad thing. Being a feminist is fighting for equal rights, which women don't have because men have privilege over us.

And god, do I hate when some menz comes and says "then call it egalitarianism! We men also need rights!" Because men don't have rights in this society. I despise it even more because it's usually white, cis, male that claims this; you know, the top of society, and not a member of an oppressed group who actually does not have equal rights.
