I've never had a gerbil but I've owned a lot of birds which are similar in how fragile they can be. Sometimes you catch the signs too late. Sometimes you just have to wait it out and let the medication kick in. Sleeping is usually recovering. When my parrot has an off day I know because he'll just sleep through it.
