I think the only rules are that you can't use already written stuff to go to your word count, everything you write has to be in the month of November, and that it has to be your own novel. You can't just copy it from an already published novel.

All you do in nanowrimo is write 50,000 words of your own novel and see if you can get to that goal by the end of the month.
