That's a better way of explaining it. I didn't mean to say that there's no threat but I mean in general for Australia we're not in any threat. No one's been hurt and I doubt anyone will be. But there's that threat that the armed person may hurt someone still looming.

Lol there wasn't a bomb threat so much as a 'suspicious package' arriving at the Sydney Opera House. I don't know if they released what that was or not but if it were a bomb we'd have heard all about it by now.

The media here goes crazy for things like this but it's nothing like the Boston Bombing.

  • Oh man, this is all everyone is talking about on Facebook and the news. I just feel sorry for the Muslim community who are now going to be bashed by the media over this.

All the news programs on my TV are still reporting on it, it's not over.

It's basically a hold up, the only reason people think it's a terrorist attack is because of the Islamic flag the gunman had the hostages put up in the window. As far as we know this isn't linked to any terrorist group, but people on social media and some "news" websites are saying that ISIS and Al-Qaeda are behind it. I even saw someone claim that bombs had been placed in the Sydney Opera house Facepalm

I wouldn't pay too much attention to what people on Tumblr are saying because majority of them are overreacting and half of them probably aren't even from Australia. We're all pretty calm because the only people that are in any real danger are the hostages in the cafe and the police who are dealing with the situation. The public is safe, they're just being urged to stay away from the general area of the cafe.

I'm still confused. @ Join the Masquerade Seems pretty calm about what's going on. But maybe other people there feel differently. No one on fb is talking about it. Twitter is going mental and so is tumblr. But most of the news sources I find down play it and say it was over hours ago except the one you sent me and the one that I just posted.

Also confused on if it's a terror attack or that's just the media being sensationalistic.

So basically I'm just confused right now.

    well I found this... http://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/live/2014/dec/15/sydney-siege-reports-of-hostage-situation-inside-martin-place-cafe-live?CMP=share_btn_tw

But... It still seems like a hold up more than a terrorist attack. Do the people even have connections to al qaeda or taliban or isis or any terrorist groups? Has anyone actually been hurt?

Twitter is also going crazy making it seem like... idk... the way people are talking about it reminds me of the bombing in boston or bombings in london or 9/11 or the mass shootings that kept happening in the u.s. But you're all calm about and you live there and I haven't actually seen anyone from australia (aside from the media and you) say anything on what's going on. It's all people in other countries freaking out and sending prayers...

I have no idea why those dates are so messed up but it's live. As far as I'm concerned things aren't under control yet but 2 more hostages just escaped.

  • The police here have asked people to stop posting about it on social media because false claims are being spread around and it's creating a heap of unnecessary fear.

Like yeah, it's probably scary if you're in the area at work trying to get home but I really highly doubt much is going to happen. It would have happened by now. Terrorists don't tend to muck around in a Lindt cafe for so long without harming anyone. Opera House and Harbor Bridge are back to normal. Trains are running. This doesn't feel like an organised terrorist attack in my opinion and the news team are thrilled and milking it for all it's worth - their office happens to be right across the road.

Thank you I was getting really confused. Tumblr is going bat shit crazy, shaming american media for not reporting what's going on right now and a whole bunch of warning posts are going around telling people in Australia in Sydney to not go downtown. o.O

  • There's literally nothing going on here. It's not all the media is making it out to be. They're dying to call it a terrorist attack for political reasons but can't because well... it's not one.

I feel for the Muslim community over here right now. They're going to cop it unfairly because of this.

Where the website says 'hostages released' that was about an hour ago now, but only 3 of x total hostages were released.

I'm so confused, the date on the website has the date from the broadcast as July 3rd. And some sources I'm looking at are reporting as if this was cleared up hours ago? Are things under control or not?

Thank you! The U.S. has reposted absolutely nothing on it. I'm really ashamed of my country right now. Ranting
