@ Join the Masquerade Ah, see, personally I've never been a fan of iambic pentameter. I think it has its function and can be utilized in great ways, but it just doesn't move me as much, you know? But that's just a personal preference. I think that's weird, though, that you weren't allowed to read or write free verse. I think the idea that "poetry rhymes" is so drilled into our heads at a young age when we're first exposed to poetry as children that it's all the more important to show what is possible with free verse. I think understanding the discipline of structured poetry is really important, too, but people are so quick to dismiss free verse as "dull" because it lacks structured meter and rhyme and there's a lot of amazing stuff you miss out on that way.
Oh I'm probably just biased because I'm a sonnet sort of fan haha. I like a set rhythm and such with poetry. I did a course on reading and writing poetry at uni and we weren't allowed to read or write anything that was free form so that really didn't help haha
@ Join the Masquerade I disagree with your comment about free verse lacking ideas, though. Free verse is my favorite to write, and often my favorite to read--there is some WONDERFUL stuff out there. I can give you some recommendations if you ever decide you want to get into it. =) But thank you, I'm glad you liked the poem.
I really love that poem. Like, I really do. And I don't usually like free verse because it sometimes lacks an idea. But you have this wonderful little idea all wrapped up there and it's lovely.
You should definitely write more poetry, especially if it makes you happy :)
