Because that's where the funeral would be. The story is going to be morbid.

I've wondered that myself sadly enough.

Just a thing though, why would you be bursting into the church? How would you know that's where everyone is? I feel like it'd be a better idea if you were to go to your house and find it empty and then just stay there waiting. Maybe call your parents or something.
