    Yeah, I think maybe Manhattan might be a great place for my setting. Maine doesn't really go all out for Christmas like they do. I've never actually been to any of the special events they hold. Kind of sad too considering I was born and raised there until about thirteen or fourteen. hehe.

    Like nefertiti; mentioned, because Manhattan is a lot more tourists and has a lot of businesses that can afford to go all out, there's a lot of spaces there that has huge Christmas displays. If your story takes place in Manhattan or your characters take a trip there, you should definitely mention Santa at Macy's (the Macy's Santa is a really huge deal and it's a big draw for New Yorkers with kids and tourists). You could also mention Saks Fifth Avenue's Christmas displays (a quick Google search can show you what it's like - but basically they do magical things with their store's windows display every year, and the unveiling is a big event). There's also the big tree in Rockefeller Center, that's also a big event every Christmas.

    If your characters are living outside of Manhattan, then Christmas is pretty much the same as it is everywhere, I guess. Some neighborhoods have really elaborate displays. Some neighborhoods barely have anything. If you're near a shopping area, there's usually smallish light displays in the street (like this). I know in Brooklyn, the neighborhood Dyker Heights is known for having really great light shows/displays (if you google "Dyker Heights Christmas", you can see).

    One more nice thing, even though there's not a ton of trees in NYC, some neighborhoods put these net lights over their sidewalk trees and it looks really beautiful at night.

    Anywho, I think unless you go to specific events, NY can be like any other place in America where they celebrate Christmas. So I think as long as you get the weather right (usually cold, sometimes we get snow Christmas - but NY usually gets more snow after the new year starts in January/February), you'll do pretty well.

    @ nefertiti;
    Hm. I guess I could try Maine again... the only problem is that where I grew up... there wasn't really much around for stores (like walmart, grocery stores etc). There was usually a place called Madison that had some like a department store and what not, plus a grocery store. *shrug* Maybe she could live in Madison instead. I do want to keep this Christmas story close to home as much as I can but... Maine is kind of spread out in terms of what you can get to without driving more than ten miles. D:

    The city? Cold lol. Depending on your area the entire street could be decorated or it can look like just another Winter day. Manhattan takes it more seriously than Brooklyn, but that's probably because of tourist. It hasn't snowed on Christmas in a bit here, so sadly you can't describe that but it can be kinda icy. Some people put lights around their windows and some people in the neighborhood even go out and have displays. (It's so cool where I live cause there is this house that has a little class box that's usually covered for most of the year but when it's around Christmas it becomes like this Christmas Wonderland thing along with the entire house and looks like this.)

    That's all I can think of right now lol
