Omg, see this is what I hate about the term "white passing" because it's usually so invalidating and insulting when it's used- like experience as a POC doesn't matter if you're "white passing" - that people get all scared. But seriously, people talk so much crap about ww/wp that they don't even stop to appreciate those who genuinely care and want things to be right. Hug You're definitely appreciated by me, especially for standing up to your friends with your beliefs. Sometimes even I don't do that.

I'm glad I didn't watch the vmas. After hearing about Miley's twerking performance a couple years ago, I just couldn't bring myself to watch anymore of her performances.... And I agree with you, Miley shouldn't have done all that crap. I'm glad Nicki Minaj called her out on that. At least I think she did something.

I did! And I do completely think it's bullshit when people praise white people but shame people of color for the same features, it's just we shouldn't prevent whites from donning those features because people have a racist double standard.

True! People seem to think that because Miley "stands up" for LGBTQ rights she deserves to have all the racist things she does glossed over but...no....thanks....

    @ Skyward Starfall

I did like her on Disney Channel, which is why it's so sad to me that she's turned into such an obnoxious human being. And that's very true, she does seem to be trying really hard to stay in the spotlight and it's just not working.

    @ pocahontas.

Omg when I first started reading this comment I thought you were being sarcastic and were gonna yell at me and I was gonna be like "No pls I really do care about these issues I promise" but then I kept reading and now I'm like phew. Anyways lol thank you!!!!

    @ loueh!

"Ya'll know he wasn't going anywhere but to bed." Bruh I didn't believe it at all but then a lil part of me was like "Let me just turn this on right quick to see AND THEN I'LL TURN IT OFF." and that did not happen sadly. I honestly feel like it would've been better if Zayn was there, just because Zayn.

    @ shilohfernandez.

The point Nicki was making was that both her video and Taylor Swift's video generated the same amount of impact and popularity in the media and our culture, but because Taylor Swift's video was prominently white, it got nominated while hers didn't. And Beyonce is only one other black woman, so that's not really fair to say "oh she got nominated too so why is everyone complaining." And the whole reason why Miley's interview was wrong, manipulated or not, was because she as a white woman was trying to talk about an issue that she has never experienced and give her opinion on it when it wasn't really needed.

    @ SmilingScarlet

My mom and I were both watching it and when it happened I just went "OHHHHHHHH GET IN" and my mom was like, "Is Nicki serious? Why's she doing that? What happened? Is this real?" and I was like, "HELL YEAH IT IS CALL HER OUT MA" lmao

    @ niklitera

That's okay! I would've been interested to hear your opinion anyway! And yes, I agree that there is an underwhelming amount of representation in culture.

I made a huge comment when I suddenly realized that 1) I do not live in the States, so I do not know how racism truly is there, since it's a whole other continent and 2) I am sick of terrible media representation of the LGBTQ+ Community, since I'm a white pre-t trans male.

Didn't you retain anything when Essence and I talked about appropriation?

    @ louis tomlinson.
I deadass laughed when Nicki was like "What's good, Miley?" I don't like Miley at all. The weed jokes were so redundant, and her calling out rappers names was also unnecessary. She's racist as hell, I just don't want anything to do with her.

    I don't like Miley Cyrus, but I don't like Nicki Minaj either…

I was on Tumblr last night and of course everyone was quick to defend Nicki for everything & shut Miley down as quickly as they defended Nicki. of course there is a bigger situation at hand than what happened last night on the VMAs. Nicki did start it all with her tweeting. I agree with what she said, about WoC having more issues in the music industry - I won’t argue with that at all - but her wording should’ve been chosen more carefully. her song was nominated for a different award; which she won… & everyone seems to be forgetting that Beyoncé was nominated in the category that Nicki was annoyed about… to me it just looks like personal annoyance with the fact that she wasn’t nominated for video of the year & then of course there was that whole thing with Taylor Swift.

now for Miley… the article for NY TIMES literally starts with ‘Here’s an edited excerpt of our interview with Miley Cyrus.’ they aren’t denying that they have basically manipulated the truth to make this an interesting story. if you read the interview she isn’t rude about Nicki, she just says what I said above: ‘She didn’t make the message she wanted to make fully clear, if she wanted to start a discussion about racial inequality then there’s a better way to do it, because it seemed like she’d made it all about her rather than the bigger issue.

as for Nicki calling Miley out… Nicki has every right to defend herself. there’s nothing wrong with that, but to stand on stage & call someone a bitch because they didn’t agree with something you did is not cool. she is a grown woman. if she has issues with Miley or Taylor Swift or whoever - those issues would be better off being brought up in private so she can explain her side/opinion & listen to Miley’s, etc. I think Nicki’s message just got muddled with the way she handled it.

the moment they said miley was hosting all i could think was "fuck" Facepalm

honestly, they should've lost my view when they threw that half-ass promo together at the last second that randomly flashed zayn's picture and upped the hype that he was gonna show....sigh.....y'all know he wasn't going anywhere but to bed.

i'm glad one direction wasn't supposed to show they deserve better that the shitfest this vmas turned out to be. lmfao it was a swirl of racism and disaster and the only good things that came out of it were halsey looking a1, nicki allowing me to see murder committed on live television (honestly how did miley keep hosting from beyond the grave??? did she steal a soul whenever she called out a rapper???), and 21p absolutely and positively destroying the entire show and making me feel like i didn't waste three entire hours, only two hours and fifty-seven minutes. and tori kelly was a nice touch, too. Cute

.......still would've been nice to get another "harry-peeling-an-orange" moment though; i would've felt like my time got slightly refunded.

also, that girl on your twitter needs to sit down and shush up, please. where is she coming from and may she please go back?? Hand

I love the fact that you're white?white passing? and you're speaking out on Miley's bs white feminism and rude wanna-be-black ass. She makes such a mockery of black women and it's disgusting.

Your twitter sounds rad, and also I agree (though I watched today On Demand to save an hour)

I've never liked Miley ever, regardless of whether she was appropriating Black culture, coming out, or even being the goody goody disney role model that little girls were looking up to back in the day. She's always irked me for some reason and I guess her former status as a Disney Channel Star makes her think she gets a free pass on everything. I don't keep up with Miley's attempts at remaining in the Hollywood spotlight because she's just this generation's Britney Spears, trying to recapture the prime of her youth when her face was on everything and she was the what girls aspired to be. The only thing i like about Miley are a few of her songs.

Miley Cyrus does nothing but appropriate black culture and I can't stand it. She's not as bad as Kylie Jenner of course, but they are both trash. I read a masterpost that was a roundup of the VMAs and yeah it seemed like nothing but a pile of garbage. Anyway, I wish Nicki would've went across that stage and snatched those disgusting dreads out of her head. I don't like Nicki's music at all, but she is a sensible, good person which is what is important. I just wish Miley would go AWAY already.

I don't think anyone should be restricted on what they can and cannot do with their own hair. mind you based on how other people react to it. As long as Miley isn't doing what Kylie Jenner did and going around saying, "White women do it better!" it's not her problem. She is not, in any way shape or form, racist for wearing a dread-locked wig. (And it's pretty ridiculous that it's considered okay when PoC appropriate culture, but not when white people do it. Not to go around acting like a white victim or anything, just saying.)

Nothing Miley did was racist. It is not her problem if someone looks at her wearing dreads and goes "Oh, that's so beautiful!" but then looks at a black person and says, "Ew." She is not committing any action. She is innocent, and people need to stop blaming her.

    @ champion;

21p were SOOOOOOO GOOD. Those 3 minutes were the best part of the night, honestly.

    @ personified.

The whole reason why her wearing dreads is an issue is because it's a hairstyle that was originated by PoC, yet when white women like Miley wear them she gets praised for it and talked about how good she looks, but when actual WoC wear their hair in dreads such as Zendaya, they get insulted and passed off as hippie trash or whatever. And I don't know who Yara Sofia is but I just looked her up and it says she's Puerto Rican, so she's technically a WoC and not really appropriating that culture. I'm sure Miley didn't wear the dreads with the intention of offending anybody, it's just that it's unfair to WoC that she can wear them and not get criticized because of her privilege while they can't. I hope this makes sense, sorry for the long paragraph :)

I don't think it matters that she had dreads, I mean I don't think she was going around saying "White girls do it better!" so I don't see the issue. It's her hair. The drag queen Yara Sophia wears dreads all the time, but no one ever talks about her.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Sometimes I wonder if I'm being narrowminded about Miley because she's qn 'advocate,' and then other people remind me that she's racist and I'm just like right, thanks.

Like good for Miley for coming out but that doesn't give her a pass to be rude and racist?

I decided a long time ago not to watch the VMA's (because I really can't stand Miley) and thanks for letting me know it's not even worth watching on demand. I'll just watch the 21p video on youtube.
