Yeah, I didn't know that was a thing either until I was about 21 and literally woke up in the middle of a panic attack. It's TERRIFYING, because...I mean, panic attacks are already terrifying, but then you wake up and you're already hyperventilating and shaking and you can barely move and you're half asleep so you're too disoriented to really even get a handle on what's happening. But yeah, nocturnal panic attacks are totally a thing and I used to have them like three to five times a week for almost a year. My poor husband had to come to bed with me every single night (even though I worked mornings and he worked nights so he was never tired when I went to bed) because it was ten times worse if I was alone.
And yeah, "linguistic prescriptivism" is kind of ridiculous. I'm descriptivist, which means I believe that the rules of grammar should be based on how language is used in ways that effectively communicate--which changes over time as culture changes. Besides, a lot of these prescriptivist rules are based on Latin being the "pure" language--you're not supposed to split infinitives in English because in Latin you CAN'T (it's all one word) and some linguistics at one point wanted to make English more like Latin because Latin was seen as superior. It's just silly and totally arbitrary and not at all helpful in making communication effective.
Thanks. :) I will always be careful to make sure to say something worthwhile when I can. I Just know that I often post links and kind of build a blog around the thing I'm posting about, and I don't want to push into spam territory.
OH, and also, THANK YOU for pointing out the broken link! I fixed that. =) I really appreciate the help!
