Thank you and I already realized by the end, that it had nothing to do with her being a fan-fiction writer. I really do not have any bias against fan-fiction maybe band-fiction and celebrity-fiction, I'll admit that one but I actually really love fan-fiction. It just really pissed me off that she would do that to him, and I think the reason I brought it up was because I finally met the girl and she believes that she's good enough to be a writer but she doesn't even have an original idea yet, she write nothing but RWBY fan-fiction, and I might be wrong but you can't sell fan-fictions and like I said while her stories are not cringe turners like some fan-fictions I've seen...like My Immortal...it's not great either to be quite honest other than his grammar and spelling problems, he's a better writer than her. Her stories are very slow paced which in itself isn't a problem if you're into slow paced stories, but her stories fail to answer their own questions, leaving you confused about things even after the story is over, and I could just be, being biased right now because I don't like the girl, but not because I'm bias against fan-fiction. I just didn't like how her "best friend" came up with something original she doesn't have the courtesy to tell me he did a good job on any of it, she walks around lording her "writing skills" over him like she's some profound writing critic and expert when she has things she needs to work on too. She'll have a thousand and one excuses for why her work isn't on point instead of just admitting that she needs to work on it, but when it comes to his work, she just says it's bad, like it can't be worked on or improved.

I agree with what everyone else said. I think fan-fiction writers are just as talented as original fiction writers and we have a lot to offer each other, but no writer should tear others down like that. Constructive criticism means mixing in what needs work with what they're already doing well and it doesn't sound like his friend is doing that.

The way the title question was phrased though, it obviously feels like there's a bit of bias on your end too. Her being a fan-fiction writer doesn't really have anything to do with how she treats him, just that she obviously thinks she's better than him. I think both version of writing have a lot to offer and require a lot of talent.

I think your friend will learn soon enough that to be a good writer, you have to have confidence in yourself. I know it's hard that she's constantly telling him he's bad, and while there are always going to be people who will put others down just to feel better about themselves, he needs to be self-aware of his own writing and confident in his currently abilities.

There needs to be a happy medium with the constructive-criticism. It sounds like you can be that person for him. Point out things that need work and build him back up with things he does well.

Good luck! Hope he keeps writing. :)

I agree with Join the Masquerade. I think original writers can help fan fiction writers and vice versa, but what she's doing isn't helping. There's a difference between criticism and constructive criticism and she isn't giving the ladder.

Creating your own world like that is hard work and since your friend did that, I'm sure he is a fantastic writer.

I think I was mostly just upset because he's really good, and he doesn't even believe he is because she keeps telling him he's not. I don't think it really had anything to do with her being a fan-fiction writer.

I think any kind of writer can judge anyone's writing, but whether they should or not...

I think your last sentence was on point. If they're judging their writing and it's not at all helpful, then perhaps they shouldn't be.
