Totally agree with PoeticMess. As a Chicagoan (someone from the actual city) I can assure that some movies and even books really do romanticize the city. People are living in areas they shouldn't be able to afford and I've seen some shows where people forget to lock their doors. We not only lock our doors, but even the windows and we always make sure the lights are on. I remember reading The Time Traveler's Wife and I was so confused on how the two characters were able to live the lavish life they had with jobs you can't even afford an apartment with. And they didn't see any crime either. It's on our news every day!

And also as an aside, seeing where Mike Biggs worked he probably didn't answer murder calls because of his neighborhood. The area he and Molly lived in is a safe one. In my neighborhood there's hardly any murder (maybe once a year) whereas some are on the news every single day because of their rates. So I always figured that was why haha. And I apologize for ranting about this.

Anyway. A lot of places get romanticized.

I think it's like that with every place. People who run television companies or produce shows are doing it for certain reasons or to attract a certain audience. They're not worried about that level of realism. Personally, I think all places have bad and good parts. You grew up in LA and saw guns, got robbed, etc. I grew up in a series of small towns and have been in a shooting, live down the street from a gas station where some was shot and killed, dead people wash up in our river, etc. There's really no escaping any of that. We all just have to find the places that work best for us. :)
