This story chronicles the story of young Charlotte Doyle as she prepares to voyage from Liverpool, England to Providence, Rhode Island to her new family home in early summer of 1832. Being brought up in an upper-middle class, she is sheltered and naive. As the journey progresses, Charlotte is forced to set aside her proper and lady-like manners and become a member of the crew.
