A year has passed since the death of Capricorn and hardly a day passes where Maggie doesn't reminisce of the characters who her father read out of books and changed her life forever.
But for the fire-eater, Dustfinger, the year has been nothing short of dreadful as he is desperate to get back to the inkworld, as he finds a storyteller and is thrown back into the words that brought him to life. Farid, Dustfinger's apprentice, is distraught without him and goes in search of Maggie and soon they are both living among the characters Fenoglio wrote. However, the story has gone awry so now they must write a new ending before it ends disastrously.
