World War II has affected nearly all of the world by the summer of 1944. Lily, the only girl her age in the town of Rockaway, doesn't feel much of an effect personally until a Hungarian refugee named Albert comes to her town. The two, being the same age, become fast friends. They both have their secrets to keep or to share as their relationship develops. They lie for each other, together. But Lily ends up telling a lie that may not only ruin their friendship, but endanger Albert's life.
