Set in the 12-century Korea, A Single Shard is a story of a 12-year-old orphan boy named Tree Ear who lives under a bridge with a crippled old man named Crane Man. After he is done scavenging for food, he sees a village potter at work and is mesmerized by the beautiful pottery he has created. One day, when no one was around to see, Tree Ear sneaks into the potter's workplace to take a closer look at the creations and is captivated by a clay box. When he is startled by the returning potter, he accidentally drops and breaks it. To repay him for the damages, Tree Ear offers to work for the potter, secretly hoping to learn to make pots himself.
