Any books that are set or were written in the Victorian era? (so around about the 19th century, I believe).
I'm reading The Mill on the Floss at the moment, and will be reading Jude the Obscure.

Victorian lit is amazing.
I haven't read Jude the Obscure but anything by Hardy is great. If you like that, then you should also like The Mayor of Casterbridge, Far from the Madding Crowd and Tess of the d'Urbervilles.
Possibly my favourite writer from this period is Oscar Wilde. The Picture of Dorian Gray is wonderful, as are his plays and shorter fiction.
Also, in terms of horror, Frankenstein and Dracula are both great (although Frankenstein technically isn't Victorian). If you're interested in the 19th century generally, then maybe try a bit of Austen? Sense and Sensiblity is my personal favourite.
I haven't read much Dickens but he's obviously an influential writer from this period. And, finally, Wuthering Heights is a book that many regard one of the best of this period (if not ever).

Far from a comprehensive outline, I know. But those are some of my favourites.

Yeah, it's something. I'm doing a unit at uni about Victorian Ideologies, and it's interesting to see how they come across in literature.

Jane Eyre is a few years before the Victorian Era, but everyone still acted the same. The women had less rights, religion was one of the main parts of everyones lives etc...

Fullmoon O Sagashite was good. It involves a girl who's visited by death spirits for children. I can't really describe it without giving anything away.

The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead is great, it has vampires and boarding schools. L. J. Smith has a lot of vampire books.

Can anymore recommend something along the lines of "The Perks of Being A Wallflower"? I love that book, and most of the things I've found like it (ie. the books by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn), I've already read. I'm looking for something new.

Also, any good WWI/ 19th Century literature reminiscent of E.M. Forster or Oscar Wilde. I'm dying for something new in that area.

Umm, I can't think of anything else. I'm stuck on Forster right now. Lol. Those are round' bout the Victorian age, but they're very good.

Does anyone know any good books kinda like the DaVinci code and Angels and Demons? I have abit of an obsession with those type books.

Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum is the original secret codes and societies/Templars conspiracies thriller, but it's much longer than the DaVinci Code and a lot harder to follow. It's worth it, though.

I can't help with the Wilde but for some reason I want to say DH Lawrence or Evelyn Waugh.
They're vaguely Forster-ish.

Thank God there's a sticky for this! All those "I need a new book to read" topics were getting annoying. Especially since they all basically gave the same teen novels over and over again for recommendations anyway! :cheese:

Anyway, I'm interested in books that deal with:
Mental institutions (I prefer YA ones, but I'll take adult as well)
And does anyone know if any books have horror involving hospitals? I never seem to find any. :XD
