Even though he gets a lot of ::rolls:, I definitely admire Nicholas Sparks as an author because although he writes romance novels, the characters' lives are multi-faceted. Unfortunately, most of the time this doesn't come across as well in the film adaptations.

For example, in Dear John, the bulk of the book has almost nothing to do with the romantic relationship. It's mostly about the main character's experience in the military and his awkward relationship with his father.

I absolutely adore Francesca Lia Block's use of vivid, rich imagery, and she's the author that really inspired me to start writing.

    And I'm a fan of B.J. Novak's tongue-in-cheek wit tehe

I love the sardonic, dry humor Douglas Adams tends to use. Everything of his I've read is beautifully done and funny and witty and awesome, and I like to think it's rubbed off on me!

I definitely think Chuck Palahniuk has taken a toll on me. I absolutely love his plots and how he lets some of the imagery up to the reader. He really inspired me to think outside the box when it comes to plots.

Also, I really enjoyed Brandon Novak's novel Dreamseller. I've been using his stories and what not to help me write a current fiction called Control, which is all about the fall of a rockstar into a heroin addiction and all the nasty shit that happens. Nothing glamourised about it what-so-ever.

Although I can never hope to emulate the social commentray and value present in William Faulkner's work, I am obssessed with his style. While he isn't really grammatically correct, he is able to convey a much greater sense of emotion using his run-on sentences. He has also inspired my use of dashes, which my English teacher despises. Cute

I also love Hemingway and Steinbeck. The American literature of that era was so powerful, and the writers were able to portray everything with a painful sense of realism.

I think it would be appropriate to say I am inspired by Hunter S Thompson since he is my demigod. I like the way Tim O'Brien writes. I am not one for long sentences and extreme description/imagery it bores me more than anything. I can't read it and I can't write it. Which is why his writing appeals to me. And Ray Bradbury inspires me just a bit. I am now going to go read Fahrenheit 451 again! tehe

I do love a lot of authors, but I don't actually care to emulate most of them. I tend to prefer writing in moderately long sentences with description and imagery. I want to make people feel what the character is feeling. I used to think JK Rowling was an author I'd emulate, but then I developed severe problems with her writing when I analyzed it closer.

I did love The Fault in Our Stars by John Green though, although he tends to sometimes put things in all caps instead of putting them in italics or bolding things, which bothers me.

So I think the issue is that I don't emulate a single other, but rather do a mishmash of things I like.

I like to think I write a mix of Fitzgerald, Poe, and Laurie Anderson but it usually just comes up like concentrated word puke.
