Disclaimer: this is different from this thread. She was asking a question, right now, I`m suggesting.

I don`t know about everyone else, but I`d like to block some people from seeing my work or my profile.
I also know some people who`ve gotten in trouble with their parents who`ve found their stories/journals/poems/etc here on mibba.
I`m just suggesting a block button on someones profile, or maybe on the drop down menu when you click on the username in the forums?

I really really never want my `rents to ever see anything I may write down.
They`ve threatened to make their own mibba. :shifty

Well, we can hide our profiles from people who aren't friends... :shifty
But I suppose that blocking certain people could be a good feature.

We can't block our stories though.

I could see this potentially causing problems though...like people aruging over why they've been blocked or something along those lines.
Wouldn't be a bad feature to have though.

^ I know you can kind of already do that on journals, but I think we should be able to block *certain people*, maybe if It were only certain parts, and instead of it saying 'you cannot see this persons journals' it says 'This user has not posted any journals' ect.

*By that I mean maybe you don't want some-one seeing certain things because you know them in real life and you don't want them to see something (e.g. stories), they've been abusive on another site ect

It is a good idea initially but I just can't see it working, it will cause a lot of problems I think like the "know who is subscribing" debate.

I don't really like this idea. I think with this, people who are breaking the rules by harrassing others will never be caught and never get punished. It's like putting a band-aid on an issue rather than actually fixing it. If someone's getting harassed by another member, I think the best thing to do would be to deal with it through the admins. By simply blocking that person, I honestly think it's just going to make even bigger problems (like Smashed Pumpkin said), and the person doing the harrassing will never get punished for their actions and will never learn that they can't do stuff like that here.

Also, I think this is one of those things that makes Mibba a bit more hostile than anyone here wants it to be. I like that Mibba is a kind of close-knit community and if people stop trying to work out their problems, and instead just simply start blocking people, I think Mibba would lose that feel.

    * And with the stories thing, I can definitely see that being abused. I've seen one story in particular on this site that was basically one member making fun of another. Luckily the other member (and her friend) saw it and then reported it, but if the stories had a block on it, that author could easily make it so that the person the story is about can't see it. It would be just another method of some members to be nasty to each other.

    ^I agree.
Possibly making it a bit myspace-ish if we can block?

I just thought of something; Didn't someone make a suggestion about anonymous stories and journal entries that no one but Admins could see the author of? I think Dujo might have approved too. That would kinda work in the same way, no? Only more controlled as everybody can see them but only certain people will know for sure who wrote it. So if it's offensive or anything, it can be reported and removed and stuff.

At least I think something like this has been up before... :shifty

Yeah, Dujo did say we'd have the anonymous stuff with the new Mibba.

    ---

As for parents, I think you kind of have to take that risk if you're not supposed to be here.
I had to when I was high school.

I would absolutely LOVE a block button.

There are some people who aren't breaking rules but I just rather have nothing to do with. Either it's their attitude or their way of communicating with others. Some members are extremely off-putting and I'd just rather not see or hear from them.

I got into a lost of trouble with my family because my sister shared my poems with them If I was able to block her from reading any of the poems I wouldn't have been grounded for over a year.

I'm going to have to agree with Audrey. If people are harrassing you in some way, they should be reported. If there are people that aren't breaking rules that you just don't get along with, just don't talk to those members. It's not that difficult. I mean, there's members that I'm not exactly a fan of, so I just don't talk to them. In life, you're going to have to deal with people you don't exactly get along with for some reason or another. There's no block button for life, so why not get used to it now?

Why not, instead of a "block button", we just make it to where "only friends can see this post" or something of that sort? Like a drop down where you can choose the privacy of something. Because it seems that the person with this idea was looking more for privacy than anything else.. Not to keep from being harassed, or anything of the sort.

Edit: And maybe we can somehow make it to where admins are exempt to this? Because they do need to be able to make sure stories, poems, etc.. aren't breaking the rules, of course.

Even if your profile is on private, others can still read your journals, poems, and stories, they just can't see your actual profile, photos, or comments, or I believe your friends list either, but that one I'm not sure.

I think making posts on the board on available to certain people is problematic if those people respond to it because someone might go look for what they're responding to.

There are ways to contact people privately.

I think friends-only journals would be a cool option. We used to have it.
