- Matt Smith:
- Right now I'm reading The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It's not perfect, the classism/colonialism (I'm reluctant to outright call it racism but that's what it probably is) is a bit uncomfortable as far as I'm concerned, but for the most part the story itself is really nice. The relationships between Mary/Dickon and Mary/Colin are really incredibly adorable. There are actually so many things I could analyse in this book, from its treatments of race and empire to class commentary, presentation of women, presentation of disability and a few other things. There's a lot to say about it, considering it's 'just' a children's book.
I've always thought that there's more to The Secret Garden, but everyone else is all 'It's just a book for kiddies!' I'm glad you agree.
I'm reading Invisible Monsters, having just read Fight Club.
