I.. don't write chapters. It might seem bad that I write scenes, with a main point in each scene. With all the people who say they go for a minimum of such-and-such-number, I feel like it's something to be ashamed of, almost XD

Depending on the scene, it can be from 200-1500 words. It's just what feels natural to me. Every time I aim for a minimum like two or three thousand, it ends up so forced that I inevitably give up.

It just seems like some people can mistake quantity for quality. I like to make a point and move on with life.

Someone who writes really long, structured 'scenes' is Kip Manley. His descriptions are astounding, but he manages to keep every single chapter to the same length (36 pages). He writes City of Roses. I'm forever in awe of his chapter writing/planning ability.

That is so true. I feel like there are a lot of people that think that the longer a chapter is, the better it is, and not only with online stories. I recently read a published ("real", if you will) book that completely blew me away and almost left me in tears. Chapter-wise, these varied from two sentences to ten pages. At some points, the shortest chapters were the ones that conveyed the most feeling.
My point out of all that rambling?
    Quantity is not necessarily quality.

^But by the same token, quality doesn't always diminish with quantity. Some people are capable of writing really long chapters that are simply mind-blowing. The sort you get caught up in without worrying about length.

Oh I wasn't saying it did. I've read some of the most amazing chapters that are terrifically long. Sometimes certain things can be written better short and others can be written better long. It really all depends on what the writer can do and where he/she takes it all.

I sometimes do my chapters in an interesting way. Whatever word count my first chapter is, is what I use as a goal for upcoming chapters. For instance, Who? has its first chapter coming in at 2,749 words. So I'm shooting for my total word count at the end of my second chapter to be 5,498. And 8,247 for my third chapter.

I usually average at least 4,000 words a chapter because I tend to write each chapter as if it were a oneshot, and my oneshots are usually at least 4,000 words long. Chapters in group stories tend to be longer (around 6,000 words) because I feel like I have to advance my own plot-line more because there's x amount of time before it's my turn to write again.

Unless someone sets out to intentionally have drabbles as chapters or something along that line, I don't like short chapters. I also don't like when stories are really inconsistent with chapter length, like when one chapter is 200 words and the next is 10,000.

I think it depends on the content within the chapter you're writing; some of mine are short but then I think oh gosh that's too short I need to make it longer but then I lose the effect of the chapter. So it depends, I think, on what's in the chapter and what you're trying to say Smile

Someone told me that my chapters were short and I had to disagree because I was personally trying to portray something about the rushed thinking of the nararrator(s) and I agree with most of what everyone else, I think it depends on what kind of story you're writing and your writing style. I personally have started experiment with drabble-ish chapters but usually for some serious active stories chapters are anywhere from 1,000 to 2,500

Personally, I hate writing really short chapters or one-shots (whatever my writing may be). I had just finished a one shot that back in the day would have only been maybe 2,000 to 2,500 words, but it ended up being a little over 6,000. I think it's just a part of my writing now since I've grown up in my writing!

I usually think about 2,000 words is a good chapter length. I could never read a story with chapters of 5,000 words or more. I've tried to read stories like that on here and it just doesn't happen for me. I usually find the chapters to be boring and containing a bunch of filler.
