Rewriting

  • I keep rewritting my main story right now Take Me Away. I've been trying to write this story since 2007 or 2008 I believe, I'm never happy with it. I'll post it and then leave it alone and then go and rewrite it. I'm never happy with my work ever, so I'll tend to rewrite all of my stories over a period of time.

  • I never really rewrite fan fiction. The only thing I've rewritten is the first chapter to Ringing in the Sane, because I really didn't like the first chapter. But this was about a year after I posted it. XD

When I write original fiction, I need to rewrite it. I don't know why I can't get it right the first time, which I seem to do with fan fiction, but I just ... can't. I just want to change everything. (Also, in the longer work I'm working on, I keep forgetting the facts and so I change them and it's all a bit confusing, so I really do have to rewrite xD) I think of a plot, and then I start to write it, and then I start to change things and want to reorder events and ugh. Facepalm But it's good, because I'm improving on it.

I also like to change tense. The first 30,000 words of the longer work I'm working on are in past tense, and the other 15,000 are in present. That's going to be a bitch to fix XD

  • I never stop rewriting my work. When I read over it, I always end up finding a sentence that sounds funny, or a typo, or a scene that reads awkwardly so I'll tweak it all the time. The story of mine that's probably been edited the most is probably Brendan Dude, since when I first wrote it, it was so flat and emotionless, when the subject it mainly deals with it very touchy and meant to convey sadness.

It's kinda frustrating though, since I'm always tweaking things even long after they're posted on Mibba, and then I think about the poopy versions of my stories that people have to read since I haven't gotten around to reposting it.

  • I've started rewriting a few things. Because in most cases, the original was an idea I loved but executed really badly. Also, because I don't plan at all, I always get new and exciting ideas that sort of fit with the overall story but would still need to be worked in from the start. Another drawback to not planning is that things tend to happen too quickly.

  • I'm going to start rewriting/ editing a few of my older stories. Mainly because I just want to get back into writing and I want to see how well they'll be received now after they've been off the site for a while. Not to mention I want to see where I can go with some of them.

  • I rewrite a lot. I have to because I write out of order and thus, when connecting the different parts, I always have to change something to make it work and turn it into an entity. Normally I will end up with around 5-10 different versions of the story but not everything will be edited that many times. I end up with so many versions because whenever I change things I've already written I save a new version just in case the first version end up suiting the story better (though that doesn't really ever happen). Also, I really like to see how the story evolves. Though I would say I edit more than I rewrite - especially dialog. I have to go back and go over it to make narration and dialog flow.

  • Going to be starting a major rewrite of some old idea I've had for years soon, and I feel a bit intimidated. I mean, I've deleted pretty much everything off Mibba so I can rewrite it (because I guess I'm too critical of myself), but never a rewrite to this extent. This is actual novel length material.

  • dru's at war.:
I remember hating having to write a rough draft in school. I was like, "can't I just do it good the first time" and then there was nothing to correct on my drafts about half the time and I was all Con
Yes! To all my teachers for making me do drafts, when I didn't have any mistakes. Cussing Finger

I don't rewrite at all. Shifty
Usually, I think about how I want to write the story before I actually get around to writing it. It makes it so much easier for me & then I don't have to change anything.

  • There's only one story that I keep rewriting and that's Heaven Help Us. I'm about to start writing the 9th version very soon.

I can't seem to agree with that story. Facepalm

  • I don't really rewrite much, but I do edit a lot. Most of my stories are pretty long, so it would take me ages to rewrite multiple versions of each, but what I often do is write something, say, over a six month period, and then go back and edit it straight after; just making sentences sound better and taking out unnecessary information and things like that. Then, maybe six months later, I'll probably go through it again and do the same thing. I've probably edited some of my stories about six times over, but I rarely rewrite something.

The only exception was when I was writing a series a couple of years ago and, because I was young and naive, I did hardly any research or preparation, and then regretted some of the decisions I'd made about how the plot was going to progress. I went back and rewrote the first two books before starting the third, and changed some of the plot threads quite significantly.

  • I am never happy with my work! I always end up rewriting and rewriting. It's like a bad curse on me.

  • I don't tend to do much rewriting unless it's chopping off a few paragraphs and starting them over before I move on. I do more editing than anything else, though that's usually just for grammar errors and typos. I'll change some sentences for structure or more continuity, but I'm rarely rewriting entire scenes.

  • For single chapters, I write and rewrite a lot before it settles right with me. There's rarely a time where the first write of a chapter is what gets posted because I'm a perfectionist. As for stories, I've rewritten a couple of them now because after some time, I start to see where I went wrong and where things can be changed or cut out, and naturally I want to bring the story up to par with my current writing. My original write of The Sin City Movement was super short and rushed and totally awful, so I'm rewriting it and it's taking a lot of time but in my opinion, sometimes rewrites are needed because you can't work with the original draft. I definitely could not work with the original draft of TSCM because it was so bad. It was like a detailed summary. Facepalm
