I hate to admit this but, I lol at ginger jokes and often at gingers themselves. This may seem funny, considering I'm Irish and we're mostly stereotyped as being red haired.

Well, it's still better than in Medieval times were red hair was due cause for being tried as a witch.
It's funny that you mention that. There's a transcript in our family genealogy for a woman who was tried in the Salem Witch Trials and found guilty of being a witch partly because she had red hair, and partly because of some butter that went rancid. I think it's interesting how people were sterotyped just because of their red hair color back then.

I'm half Irish, half Indian, but I've always wanted red hair and green eyes and freckles. The whole deal. I do have some coppery looking highlights in my hair and they come out under the right lighting. My friends tell me that my Ginger Girl is showing whenever it comes out. And then they go on telling all these stupid jokes that make fun of my heritage. They call gingers day walkers and say they have no real friends. I want to tell them, "Yeah I know! All my friends-- I can't even call them my real friends anymore! Probably only because I'm such a day walker though."
It sucks that I force myself to bite my tongue and walk away before the words escape.

    Sup, natural red-head/ginger here Bye

In school I got bullied because of my hair colour. Both physically and mentally. I've had guys in the street slap the back of my head and call me "ginger freak" just as I walked past. My hair is more auburn than ginger but in summer it goes this colour (and that is me in the picture Shifty).

I get called "daywalker" "ginger ninja" "carrot top" "gingernut" "ginny weasley " (Rolling Eyes) "ginger pubes" and others File Seriously, people think it's funny but try getting taunted for years because of your hair colour and see how funny it is then.

And I disagree with "ginger jokes are the same as blonde jokes" because I've never seen a blonde beat up for her hair colour, but gingers have been.

I think it's absolutely horrible, I don't even know how it got started, really! I mean, us Brunettes and black haired people aren't made fun of. And Blonds aren't made fun of too bad, it's just ridiculous! Red hair is beautiful, I always wanted red hair! I'm going to dye it red some day just to feel a little more pretty.

I love Gingers, and I would never say a mean thing about them! I've always been obsessed with them, hell, I'm dating one! xD

All of this is so true. I hate how everyone thinks it's "no big deal" to make a joke about a ginger. Rolling Eyes It's a lot more hurtful, because a lot of times--like you said--they get beaten up or publicly ridiculed. That's not even to say how many times I've been called a "Firecrotch" because of that stupid thing with Lindsey Lohan. It's just very hurtful.

I'm a natural ginger, and honestly, it sucks.
It's not that I mind the word, but people take it too far. They have stopped accepting anyone with red haired genes at places like sperm banks, because people don't want kids with red hair, and they have an abundance that no one uses. :c

And 'firecrotch' is the worst. I don't know why, even if someone is just "joking" it makes me sick to hear. I don't want to be treated differently because of something I was born with. I didn't choose to be pale as a ghost or have freckles, and I didn't choose my hair color.

Another thing is how gingers are looked at like some kinky sex monkeys or some shit. I just... I can't stand it. It has gotten to the point where it isn't funny anymore.

I don't see how it's any worse then making fun of blondes for being dumb...no matter what people will pick on someone for something.

^ That's kind of fatalistic, though, surely? I don't see why it's okay to pick on anyone for anything.

I think the claim that blondes are stupid is kind of balanced out by the whole "blonde bombshell", sex symbol stereotype. That doesn't make it okay, but gingers don't seem to have any redeeming factors that I know of.

I'd personally love to be ginger. My hair is naturally brown but lightens in the summer, and I find it so boring. Yet, at the same time, I wouldn't want to dye my hair a crazy colour. I think ginger would be a good middle ground.

I've never met anybody who got beat up for being blonde. I know people who have been just for being ginger. That's how it's worse.

But the thing is, in most cases with blondes, it is all a joke. People don't usually torment them. If anything, they are looked at as the hot ones. But redhair brings actual hate into it. I have met people who automatically meet me and think, "Ew, ginger. Why would I be friends with her?"

The last few statements related to my post actually shocked me.

I think it's silly to judge someone by their hair color...I'll be honest, I've called redheads "fire crotch" before, but it was meant in purely joking manner...to take it to the point of actual hate is absurd.

I think the biggest stigma with being blonde is the assumption that you are a whore...which being a blonde I've had that thought based on my hair color...which hurts, but it can't hurt nearly as much as actually being beaten for it.

One of my friends has red hair, and we tease each other about appearances all the time. She'll say something dumb, so I'll say "Shut up, Ginger," to which she'll respond "No way, four-eyes!"

    It's all in good fun.

I think that it's completely ok, as long as both parties are ok with it. But as soon as teasing like that starts to take on a nastier feel, it's time for it to stop.

I have red hair. A lot of people think it's pretty. I have people in other states who made me swear never to dye it. And I don't even know them!

I'm very pale. My mom calls it porcelain. I think I'm pretty, except for a little flab and my teeth. I used to have freckles, but I don't, except on my knees and arms a little. My sister has red hair, and she's beautimus.

And yet, every teen where I live calls me "Emo ginger". "Ginger". Even red heads call me ginger! Maybe it's my style as well as my hair...

Not a whole lot of people have red hair, so I take pride in it. Unless it gets extremely light colored, I'm not dying it. It's more orange than red, it gets lighter every year.

I find it a little funny when they're friendly, but it's horribly offensive to a lot of people.

I have a fair few ginger friends and they invariably enjoy the banter. XD and a friend of mine (who isn't ginger) loves to do the whole "gingers have no souls" thing, and we all find it funny, to be fair. (Although I tend to ruin it on a technicality by stating my belief that no one has a soul. XD)

I'm sure if you were calling your friends a "fire crotch" it might be joking...but to me, personally, as a natural redhead it's kind of offensive because there's no real reason for it. Shifty I'm not saying that you offend me, though, because I can understand that particular style of joking between friends...Shifty If that makes any sense at all.

But I do think there's a big difference between teasing redheads and teasing people with other colors of hair. In my school, there was actually a "kick a ginger" day where the whole object was to push, shove, and otherwise hurt redheads...and only redheads. Some of it actually got really violent and yet...you never hear of a "kick a blonde" day or "kick a brunette" day. Shifty

Yeah, like the friends I called that are close friends, and for us it's just a joke because we call each other names playing around alot...they get called that and in return they fire back with "blonde whore" or something like that. It's all fun and games for us. I would never do it to someone who took offense to it whatsoever.

That's not right at all...but like a past post said redheads have been treated badly since like forever pretty much. I'm not saying it makes it right, but it's kind of an oddity and I think everyone is inclined to hate on an oddity...even animals.

I do that kind of joking with my friends too so it's okay. Cute The only time I have a problem with it really is when someone I don't know says it to me. Or when a guy says something along the lines of Oh, a redhead. I bet you're a firecracker in bed, huh? Not that being a firecracker in bed would be bad...but I hate when people make assumptions on a redhead based on their hair color. XD

That's true, as sad as it is. It's the same way with albino people and animals. It seems to just be...nature, I guess? I don't think humans have that excuse though because I think everyone can learn to keep their mouths shut when it comes to saying offensive things, even if that won't ever happen. Maybe someday there'll be enough redheads to where it won't be such an oddity anymore. XD
