Much Ado About Points

What about threads that are Confessions or What Are You Listening to Part 2? That just depends on who gets the last post, which has gotten nasty before.

Me either. I wouldn't want the author of the thread to get credit for my work and posts, that seems weird to me.

Could we maybe bring back post counts? (Instead of giving points for things in the forums.) That way you can still see how active someone is on the site, or at least that part of the site.

I think the idea is to encourage discussions (ie you're rewarded for getting other people to post because you started an interesting thread rather than for your own posts, so there's no incentive to spam something random), but it wouldn't really work since so often discussions move away from the OP's initial post + we already have a thread for almost everything.

I still like the idea of points for posts on discussion threads, tbh (or ideally for various specific threads, like discussion threads on the Tips board but not say the story pimpin' thread). What if the ratio was really high, like one point for every hundred posts? I understand not wanting people to spam for points, but if points are about rewarding activity on the site and writing, the boards accomplish that as well.

I doubt that would happen. We were supposed to get a personal private post count with New Mibba but apparently that went out the window. I don't think we'll ever have any form again . . .

Well that sucks. I understand that points might just be the new thing, but if it's supposed to be a measure of how active you are on the site, it seems unfair to leave out the forum activity.

We used to have post counts, but Dujo felt they were being abused, I believe, so they were removed.

I made a Scribophile account to see what kind of critique exchange you were talking about, and I really like it. I think that would be a good companion to comment swap for users who want detailed feedback. I also think we may need a page for critique swaps, so users can browse stories currently offering points for critiques. Our system would have to be different since points come out of the author's point count, but I think we could make something like that work.

Yeah, it would probably require a lot of planning and coding, but if it's done, it could be wonderful on Mibba.

What if, for posts on forums, whoever created the thread gets so many points per reply. So like, every five or ten posts in the thread, or whatever the number, the creator could get like, two points. So long as the posts aren't spam, or the author spamming their own thread, stuff like that. If that happens, their posts could be revoked. Just a thought

Working with this idea - without giving someone points for someone else's work - perhaps we could give points per recc. This way, the thread starter could get points for putting up a thread that Mibbians find enjoyable or useful or interesting...creates discussion...whatever.

That's a good idea :)

Since we'll be able to rate stories in the future, maybe people could get a point every time they rate something?

And maybe we could use points to buy the birthday balloons that you used to get on the boards.

I know this thread is kinda old but I was just thinking, and I don't believe this was suggested before, but when the Points system works, that whenever someone registers, they can add the name of the user(s) who recommended them Mibba, and both they and the users they write down can get Points. Kinda like other sites do. :]

Also, points would be a cool reward for users who host Contest Revival contests to completion. At the moment there's no real incentive other than the credit of being an awesome person.
