TV is somewhat a part of culture. Especially in America. Television shows have overtaken movies in popularity and people are just completely addicted to weekly installments of their favorite shows.

However, the TV/broadcasting industry is realizing that less and less people want to be $80-100 a month for cable or even install a huge antenna for seven free channels. These are being called "zero TV" household. They either have no TV or they don't have cable/dish. Instead, they choose to watch TV via Netflix, Hulu, the internet, or smartphones.

These numbers were 2 million and have no reached 5 million households in the U.S.

    ---

I had cable until I moved out. I just have Netflix. Most people I know who have left their parents' home and who live either by themselves or with a significant other, tend to only have Netflix and maybe one other streaming service.

It seems that teens who live at home or adults who still live there have a cable. Large houses with multiple roommates tend to have it because splitting the bill is easier. But that seems to do it.

    ---

Where do you guys fall in the TV/Zero TV culture?

There is cable in every room at my house. We have Netlix on our devices and downstairs in our movie room. I mainly watch Netflix because it has just about everything.

I know what you mean. The people I know either have cable or Netflix. They hardly have both because cable is so expensive. Netflix is cheap and much easier and better than cable to me.

I don't have television. My parents got ride of it about 8 years ago because I was 'addicted', meanwhile I was 8 years old. We don't have Netflix and I don't watch anything on Hulu or whatnot. We have the whole "huge antenna for 7 free channels" but we get about 40. I dislike all of them because if I were to watch television I'd watch the History Channel and Discovery Channel, and all we get are shitty shows like Jerry Springer and Maury. I've basically grown up only watching PBS and the occasional show on the CW like That 70's Show or BBT. For the most part I've only ever watched PBS because television shows generally bored me. Although I may ask my parents to get me Netflix because I watched Supernatural for the first time on the CW the other day and I'm on the second episode of seasons 1 right now on some site where you can watch it for free.

I could watch tv shows and movies on online, but given that I have crappy internet, my household has satellite/cable (though I think we're being overcharged since a good majority of the channels come in and out most of the time.

We don't have TV because I think that the TV Licence is over priced and unreasonable to begin with. I just don't agree with the principle of all of it going to the BBC when there are better things that money could go to.
We just watch things online and on play back tv like BBC iplayer and 4OD, which I think is better so we don't spend hours starring at it watching crap. And it means that I can watch it whenever I want to.
I think that the majority of broadcast tv is total crap anyways.

"I think that the majority of broadcast tv is total crap anyways."

A lot of it really is. We kind of have the evening TV schedule memorized so we know the best shows to put on for background noise, but half the time the TV is on we aren't paying attention to it. (My boyfriend's parents' house.)

    @ dru saves the songs

Yeah, the same here, when I go to visit my family the tv is always on but no one's paying attention to it. It's just a waste of electricity.

There's cable on all rooms at my parents' house except on mine. I refused on letting them pay for it since I have my 10 dollar payment per month for my xbox live account and the netflix account, so all I do is play videogames and very rarely see something on netflix. For my weekly Doctor Who feels I always access it online, same for Adventure Time. I don't see a need for a TV and feel that it's a waste of money to pay whatever is it that companies charge for watching.

In all honesty, most of what's on TV today is garbage. There's no more than 5 shows that I find interesting enough and, like most of you have said, most of the times people use the TV as background noise.
