On LiveJournal you can make lists of people and have blogs only be available to them.

I thought this might be cool and helpful for several reasons.

    A) automatic friends only generated list

    B) able to use blogs to plan surprises and block recipient, but you can advertise.

    C) sharing personal journals, possibly containing personal information, with not certain users

    D) contest updates for members only.

    Etc.

I think they should be visible to admin and blog mods though, to prevent abuse.

Just to clarify, for B, you mean block users from certain blogs, not all your blogs, correct?

Correct. Basically you type your blog and at the bottom you can select if you want it to appear to only a certain list.

Now granted, if a user wants friends only blogs or to only let five real-life friends read their blogs, I think that's their right. But I think they should be visible to staff because that'll ensure they don't become bashing journals or something.

I know this could turn bad, but I can see it working for so many things and a lot of users like the option of 'friends only' blogs.

Yeah, I think as long as everything remains visible to blog mods, it wouldn't be a problem – they read all the blogs, so it wouldn't change anything for them; it'd just mean fewer people would see some of the problem blogs before they were taken down.

I like the idea. I feel like Dujo had said something about adding more privacy options for blogs in the past? When he added the option to hide blogs from non-members? But anyway yeah I'm down with expanded privacy options as long as they don't lead to consequence-free bashing, which this wouldn't.

I think it's fine idea then. I remember when we had journals, and you could set them to Friend's Only. Now granted, your system is... more personal, for lack of a better word, but I do like it. So long as it's visible to staff as you said, I don't see it being a problem :)
