To the Death

Ramona smiled. "Now that you mention it, I am pretty hungry." She stood up, lingered by the seat for a few seconds, then turned to Ryker. "I've never seen you before. I mean, maybe I have. I just can't remember. Sorry. I've been trying to figure out if I've ever seen you at all. It's so strange, up on that stage. So many different people. All of them have their own lives. It's crazy to think about. There's more prayers in that crowd than in any church."

"Sadly despite it not being an actual church, it is like an actual outdoor funeral," Ryker said, spitefully. He then stood up and held out his hand to help her up. Whether she took it or not, he still led her to the next cart, which contained a full bar and a large, ornate wooden table with a large variety of food that looked more like it belongs in an art gallery rather than on a plate for them to be eating. Ryker's eyes widened and he quickly went to sit down and began piling mountains of his food onto his plate.

Ramona took his hand and walked to the next cart. All the food was overwhelming, and she couldn't help but chuckle at Ryker piling his plate up. "You're even hungrier than I am." Ramona looked at the food and grinned. "I don't blame you, though. These look incredible." She sat down. "I don't know what to eat first." She turned to Ryker, who was still grabbing food.

"I have no clue what I'm even taking, so I'd say just go for it all and try a bit of each of it. I'm just hungry because my brother and I have been scrounging, and I haven't really eaten in the past forty-eight hours," Ryker said, before starting to devour the mountain of food before him. That's when the Capitol representative walked in, and was all smiles.

"Well you certainly won't have to worry about lack of food from here on out. You can eat whatever you want, whenever you want. And, because it's from the Capitol, it is all the best food one could ever imagine!" She sat down from across them, and said," My name is Holly Silverstein. I'll be your Public Relations Director for the whole time we're together. I'll be helping you get camera ready and setting up all of your public interactions from here on out. Nice to meet you two!"

Ramona hesitated before putting on a slight smile. "N-Nice to meet you too. I'm Ramona." She said, before realising that she already knew. Idiot, she thought to herself as she grabbed some fruit and chocolate from the table. "At least..."She trailed off. Ryker said no 'ifs', and he was right. How could she expect to survive if she didn't think like a survivor. "At least the caring capital gives us a great meal." Ramona's voice was laced with sarcasm, and she began to eat.

"Oh, we should thank President Keene personally," Ryker replied to Ramona, chuckling before continuing to stuff his face. Holly definitely did not look amused, but let it drop. "Okay, you two. You have a very long group of days coming up after this. So, after you finish your meals, you should go and get a good night's rest while you can. Sadly your survival advisor will not be meeting up with us until we reach the Capitol tomorrow, because that's where they are from. As you both probably know, District 12 is very low on the amount of victors that are alive- meaning there are none. So, the Capitol assigns them to us. But hopefully that will change this year, right?!" Holly said, trying to sound almost cheerful with it, which only earned her a look of disdain from Ryker.

  • "Thanks Holly. I'm going to go into the other cart. Be sure to let the people in the Capitol know that the chocolate was much appreciated." Ramona stood up, smiled at Holly, and began to walk out. Before she opened the door, she turned to face Ryker. "Enjoy the rest of the food." She said teasingly, a small smile on her face.

Back in the other cart, Ramona sat down. Really, she had just wanted to get away from the Capitol's minion. She had no idea. Food and fancy dresses don't make up for the slaughter waiting to happen.

Ryker chuckled, and finished scarfing down his food before nodding to Holly and standing. "Sorry, but I'm going to go as well. And I'm going to say right now that, as expected, we're probably going to be very pissy about this entire experience considering we're going to a slaughterhouse for everyone's entertainment. So I'm sorry if we're not primping and shooting rainbows out of our asses," Ryker said to Holly as he left to follow Ramona, leaving Holly speechless.

Ramona looked up as Ryker entered the cart. "I'm guessing you were annoyed by the Capitol's minion, too? I'll be polite, but the cheery look is killing me." She smiled. "Glad I'm not alone in my annoyance, though. The last thing I want before I go into that arena is to be paraded around. I'm not complaining about the food, though. Curse the capitol and their fancy chocolates." Ramona laughed, looking out the window again.

Ryker laughed, then, and said," So I'm guessing that chocolate is your little weakness- huh?" He walked over and say down beside her before saying," Well, before we get to the Capitol tomorrow, I wanted to talk to you. What exactly can you do in the arena that is helpful? And what would your weaknesses be so we can look to avoid them?"

Ramona thought for a second, then smiled. "Well, chocolates are a weakness." She shook her head. "No, okay, being serious now. I don't know how to swim. So, hopefully that's not in the arena. I'm a fast runner, and I know how to fight - the basics, anyway. I'm fast enough to dodge, but if they manage to keep up with me, I don't know how well I'd actually do, especially in hand-to-hand combat. I can also climb. Anything else, we'll just have to see. What about you?"

"Well," Ryker said, chuckling," I know its not really supposed to be allowed in the District, but a lot of the guys who work in the mines train to fight. I was involved in that as much as I can. So, I know how to fight a lot, whether it be hand-to-hand, or with a lot of weapons. I know how to use blades, and throw knives. I also know how to climb, and am fast. I know how to swim. I have to try really hard in order to be stealthy. I have no idea about how to survive other than making a fire, though." He sighed, and said," So I think that is where I am going to be spending a lot of my time training in learning things I can eat in the wild, and maybe trapping animals."

  • "Yeah, I'm not completely sure about food, either. Hopefully we can tell what's poisonous and what's safe to eat. Wouldn't that be something? Going into the Hunger Games and dying from poisonous berries." Ramona shook her head and smiled. "But it's good that you know how to fight, and that at least one of us knows how to swim. I think I can be stealthy. Between the two of us, we should be fine." Ramona looked at Ryker, before lowering her eyes. "I hope it's not us left. I mean, not that I want you to die. Or that I want to die. I just don't want it to come down to that."

"That'd be really ironic and anti-climatic," Ryker said, shaking his head," But there is always that group of people every year who just messes up like that and does die that way. And I hope that we are not those people." He sighed, then, and continued," I'm gonna miss the way the sun comes up in the morning in District Twelve. I mean, it was gloomy, and shitty, but I'm going to miss it."

"Things will be different, that's for sure. You get so used to things. The little things seem so big all of a sudden." Ramona smiled. "What do you think the capitol's like? I'd hate for it to be a thousand versions of Holly... which it probably will be. I wonder if they seem even crazier in person." Ramona looked at Ryker. "We might be the only sane people there."

Ryker looked over at her with a raised eyebrow, and said," If you think that I'm sane, then you might as well be the conductor on the Capitol's crazy train." Huge chuckled, then, before continuing," And it will be a bunch of Holly's. I've seen pictures and heard stories. My father used to go on and on about it before he ran off there. I don't think a single person there has a normal hair or eye color."

"Amazing. Just what I need." Ramona grumbled. "And, you have to be more sane than the Capitol's people. I can actually have a conversation with you. I hope we get there soon. But... At the same time, I don't. It'll make it too real. And like I said, I'll have to see people from the Capitol. Maybe I can get more chocolate." Ramona laughed.

Ryker laughed, and then said," Well, we won't be getting there until tomorrow. So, I say go on out to the other car and just take every bit of the chocolate. It's all for us anyway, and I don't really eat chocolate. So go for it." He chuckled, then, and sat back, looking up at the ceiling above them, with an empty look on his face.
