I think having it as a televised game is far too like the Hunger Games. In the original post, it said a secret lab which had me thinking this was going to be hidden from the public, where they would be outraged if they discovered that children that had been kidnapped were experimented on in such a way that it manipulated their genes to produce these powers. Having it known to the public/televised kind of defeats the purpose, I think, and if everyone knows how would they be able to escape and live normal lives?
The reason why I wanted to write for this was because it seemed like it could possibly be dark, with it being all secretive and how the scientists would have wanted to hunt and capture them again without too many people being knowledgeable about what the boys could actually do. The concepts of fighting so that people can bet/be made into a sport is overused, in my view, and I wouldn't want to write for this is that's what we go with. There's so many published books and films with ideas like that.
