Fix the Broken

"Don't worry, Hanna. He won't even be able to be near you." I said quietly, more for her comfort than my own ears. It had been a relatively boring day at work, nothing really going on when she showed up, tear-stained and carrying a small bag.

"Minseok, I have the paperwork you wanted, plus we're getting the new officer today. I'm not sure when he'll be here. Do you want to do the interview or should I?" I asked as I pushed the folder toward my partner.

"You do it, I don't have the patience today." He laughed, his laughter cut short when he saw Hanna.

"Just keep an eye on her. She's had a hard day. She's staying with me." I explained, walking over to her. "Hanna, this is my partner, Minseok. You've met him, right?" I asked softly, and he smiled politely, holding his hand out to her.

She shook his hand cautiously then nodded,"Thanks," she murmured gently and gave a weak smile. She was thankful for the coverage her makeup gave her, the bruises littered on her face were more than noticeable. She hoped this would be her salvation - a new start for her and the baby that lay in her womb. When she'd found out- he had gotten so angry, she'd never seen him that way before. Sure he'd beaten her senseless before but this was unleashed rage she wanted no part in.

"I appreciate the help," she said to them lightly, "I couldn't do this without it."

"Don't worry about it. You're more than welcome to my house, you know this." I smiled at her, my eyes shifting to the clock on the other side of the room.

"I have an interview, and then we can go get some food, sound good?" I asked her, grabbing the folder off the desk. "See you in a bit." I walked towards the conference room, down the hall and passed several doors. I hoped it wouldn't take long, and chance to leave early was a good one. "Jongdae Kim?"

"Is there anything I can get you?" Minseok asked, leaning against the desk across from her. "Something to drink, company?" He smiled at her, noticing the bruises her makeup just barely covered.

"Uhm, some water would be nice, and company if you can spare me some," she said with a weak smile, trusting didn't come easy anymore especially when it came to men. She brushed her hair out of her eyes then sighed.

He looked up and stood,"Thats me," he said to her as he smiled wide.

I raised an eyebrow and nodded. "Alright, have a seat." I said, walking to the chair across from him. We normally played kind of aloof when new comers applied. To see how well they responded under pressure. "What precinct are you transferring from and why are you transferring here?"

He stood straight, walking from the room towards the kitchen and grabbing some water and setting it in front of her. "Have you been friends with Gabi long?"

"A couple years, she helped me through some tough times," she murmured lightly and sighed, "when I was homeless for a bit," Hanna said to him as she sipped the water slowly, "she kept me alive, fed me and got me a job," she smiled a little,"Trouble seems to follow me wherever I go these days,"

"The daegu precinct," e said to her as he smiled a little, "My chief said I had the makings of a city detective so he ordered me to apply here, " he told her.

He looked at her differently. He didn't like making assumptions because you're more likely than not wrong about people. "She's a great person. I'm sure shes lucky to have you as well."

"How long have you been on the force?" I asked, looking through his files. "And what do you think you can bring to our precinct?"

She smiled,"I suppose, but she is always saving me, it's kind of funny actually," she said lightly as she licked her lips.

"I've been on the force for five years, since I was 19 years old. I bring a fresh pair of eyes to any case we're working and a positive attitude which can be extremely important when working in this line of work," he said to her.

"Alright, well welcome to our precinct. Tomorrow you'll come out into the field with myself and several other officers and we'll test you out there. But as of right now, your transfer is accepted. Follow me, I'll show you to your office." I said, closing his file and standing, walking over to the door.

"Funny? How so?" He asked curiously, crossing and uncrossing his legs.

She looked at him,"I'm a former drug addict, battered woman who can't take care of herself or stay out of trouble," she said to him, "I've been sober for three years but still," she murmured.

He smiled and stood up, "Thank you!" he said bowing respectfully with a grin on his face.

I smiled a little at his bow, heading over to the door. "You're welcome." I said, heading down the hall towards the rows of offices. "Because you're not new to the force, you get an actual office as opposed to the cubicles. So you'll be able to use this one." I said, opening the door.

"I don't think thats funny. I think it's amazing that you were able to find the strength to find yourself again. I don't see a battered woman either. I see someone brave enough to realize she needed to leave and followed through." He said earnestly.

She shrugged a little, "I guess," she said to him as she chewed on her bottom lip, "I'm not doing it for me... but for my baby," she murmured softly, "He wanted me to kill it," she told him.

He smiled as he followed her and laughed,"Awesome!" he said and laughed, "This is great, thank you so much I won't disappoint," he said to her.

I smiled a little. "Your file says you were one of the best in your former precinct. I'm not expecting disappointment, especially from you. If you need help getting around, people are more than helpful here. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the area." I said, before pointing towards my office. "If you need anything from me, my office is right there."

"You are your baby right now. So you need to do it for you, just as much as for him or her." He told her.

She nodded,"You're right," she said to him lightly and laid her head back on the chair.

He nodded a little,"Alright thank you," he said to her smiling a little as he looked around the office, his first office - he never expected this.

I walked back into my office and looked over at Hanna. "Ready to go? We can go get some food now, and shop for whatever you need."

He smiled at Hanna and sighed. "I'll see you both later."

She nodded a little as she stood up,"Good, I'm hungry," she murmured softly.

He sighed as he sat at his desk, "Finally,"

I packed up my bag and sighed, closing it up. "Where do you want to eat?" I asked, putting it onto my shoulder.

"Well, we could just order in - I kind of don't want to be in public," she said to her laughing a little.

"Then thats what we'll do. How's pizza sound?" I asked as we walked out.
