Jane wanted to believe her sister, but at the same time she didn’t know what to expect out of the world. She had been raised in the labs, and while it much more pleasurable than it sounded, at the same time it limited her outside knowledge. She hadn’t ever thought anyone would be a threat to her or her sister, nor had she ever in her wildest dreams imagined people would rip them away from their home. As the men stepped inside, she eyed them. She longed to beg with him to let them return home, or least let them know the status of those who had raised them. What would happen to the scientists? To Margaret, who taught them to read, or to Dr. Lee, the man who had successfully cloned Jane, and treated the girls very similar to his own. Eric didn’t look like he cared for their questions, though.
She listened closely, making a slightly sour face at fact they’d be watched over. It was reassuring, in a way, that they would taken care of, but that could mean all sorts of things. The man was so curt with them, it did little to make her feel comfortable with the government being in control of their well-being.
Once the man left, Jane let out a deep breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. Squeezing her sister’s hand weakly, she gave Abigail an uneasy look. “What do you think is going to happen to everyone?” She didn’t wait for an answer, though, as she kept speaking. It was a habit she’d always had when she was nervous. She would prattle on, and on, and even interrupt people when thoughts came to her.
“We should have been prepared for this. Not that I’m blaming anyone, it was impossible to know when this could happen, but it would be preposterous to think we would be safe forever. Where are we going to go from here? I don’t even know what they’d do with us. Can you imagine all the tests they’re going to do? Especially on you.” Letting out a frustrated groan, Jane stood, gently releasing her sister’s hand as she walked over towards the hotel room window. She peeked out, frowning when she caught sight of the two guards outside their door. Everything felt so unreal to her.
