    Mia's strength had yet to regenerate itself. Her high hopes had been viciously crushed by Carter's lack of sentiment. How had he so swiftly decided he wanted quits? Shouldn't he fight?

    The answer to that remained unknown to her. The worst of all wasn't exactly his absence—it was much more than that. She had read books, conducted lonely midnight researches, interrogated strangers and probably befriended many nurses. Yet none of the information gathered through her efforts were enough to convince her that things would be okay; that a better future was to come; that they would inexorably be together again; that he wouldn't die.
