'Till the End of the Line

Steve nodded at her words, "I'm the same way." He said with a small chuckle. It was true, even though he was an Avenger, when he wasn't 'saving the world' he still trying to get caught up to the world nowadays or he was trying to help Bucky get caught up. None of that was really exciting, and Steve knew that, but he didn't mind because it was part of his everyday life and he liked it that. He looked over when the waiter showed up at the table with their food, setting it down with a grin. Steve thanked him with a smile and looked over the food, "This looks absolutely delicious." He stated and looked up at Mackenzie.

Mackenzie smiled. She was glad that they seemed to have a lot in common. She supposed that was why none of the more recent dates she'd gone on had ever worked out. She never clicked with any of those guys. For some reason her friends thought that setting her up with someone who was the complete opposite of what she was would get her out more, but that wasn't the case at all. Things just never seemed to progress. Ever. Steve wasn't like those guys though. She was finding that she had quite a bit in common with him. It was refreshing to say the least. "It so does." She agreed when their food was brought to their table.

Steve was really glad that he was getting along really well with Mackenzie. He had more in common with her than all of the dates Nat and Jules set him up on combined, and that fact alone made him really happy. Having things in common with someone was the best thing you could ask for in a date along with actual chemistry with the person, at least that's what Steve always thought. Back in the forties all the dates Bucky ever set him up on weren't any good because for one, the girls were never interested in him, and for two, he never had anything in common with those girls.

Mackenzie was so glad that things seemed to be going well tonight with Steve. It was a welcomed relief knowing that not all guys were as horrible as the ones she gone on dates with in the past. There was a reason why she'd sworn off of dating for a while, and then she'd tried the whole online dating thing to humor her friends and that hadn't ended well, so this was the first real date she'd been on in a while. Steve seemed great though. They had a lot in common and she found that she could really be herself around him. "So, I think we've talked enough about me tonight. Tell me about you. I know your order by heart, but I don't know much else about you." She laughed.

Steve laughed lightly at her words, "Let's see. Only child. Raised basically by my mom. Dad died when I was young, so she basically had to be the one to raise me. Raised in Brooklyn and never really left, though I did spend some time in Germany for a good bit. I was in the military for a little bit. Bucky and I both actually." He explained and then took a breath. Should he tell her about the Avengers? Or about the fact that he is actually ninety years old? He didn't want to let that out and scare her away because of everything he was telling. He knew that it was a lot to take in at first.

"How long were you two in the military?" Mackenzie asked curiously. She had a feeling that there was more to what he was telling her than he was letting on, but she wasn't about to push him to tell her anything. This was really only the second time they'd really talked, every other time it was brief, quick exchanges in the diner when she was taking his order. If he wanted to tell her something, he would, but she wasn't going to expect his entire life story front to back in one go.

Steve smiled and thought about it, "We were in the military at two different times. Our time together was brief actually. We were invading a train of the enemy and the door was opened, Bucky fell out. The bar he was holding onto ended up breaking before I could grab him and he fell off the train to what everyone assumed to be his death. But alas, he's still here and my friend Jules, the one who told me about this restaurant, is currently very smitten with him." He explained with a small chuckle.

"That must have been tough on you for a while, thinking he was dead. You two seem close." Mackenzie said thoughtfully. She couldn't imagine losing someone that close to her, or thinking that anyway, and then finding out that she hadn't. It was probably at least a somewhat welcomed relief, but there was probably more to it than that as well. "Well, your friend definitely has good taste. This food is amazing." She said with a slight laugh.

"Oh it was the worst thing ever." Steve said before taking a bite of his spaghetti, "He's my best friend." He added after he had swallowed all of the food. He took another bite of his food before Mackenzie spoke about Jules having good taste because the food was amazing, "Oh I know right? She was right when she said that the food was great. I will definitely have to keep this restaurant in mind for future reference. Though, I do happen to know about a certain diner that has great food as well and the wait staff is very friendly, especially this one waitress." Steve said with a grin before he took a drink of his water.

"I can't even imagine what that must have felt like." Mackenzie said, a slight frown tugging at the corners of her lips. The way he talked about Bucky made it clear just how close the two of them were. He seemed more like family, a brother, than a best friend. She couldn't even begin to imagine how Steve must have felt when he thought he'd lost him. Losing family, whether it is a blood relation or not, was always hard regardless of who it was.

"Oh yeah? And where exactly is this diner? I might have to go and check it out for myself." She grinned. She knew that he was always there on a date with someone whenever he came in, but she was honestly kind of glad that his friend, Natasha she was pretty sure he'd called her a few times, had set him up on all of those blind dates in the first place. If she hadn't, well, Mackenzie didn't really know if she'd be sitting here on this date with Steve.

Steve smiled lightly at her words, "I hope you never have to." He replied and took a sip of his water before taking another bite of his food. When she replied to his comment about the diner, he couldn't stop the grin from spreading across his face, "It's this little place about maybe twenty minutes from here. Small little diner. Great food. Great people. Like I mentioned, the wait staff is really great as well. I've had a couple dates there, so I would say I know the place really well by now." Steve joked with a grin, not even able to keep a serious composure together.

"Hmmm, I might have to try it out for myself sometime." Mackenzie said with a slight grin of her own. She really was glad that Steve had been seated in her section every time he'd gone there on a blind date. She was also glad none of those blind dates ever really worked out. If they had, well, she didn't think she'd be sitting here across from him right now. And she was glad that they hadn't because she really felt like she and Steve were hitting it off tonight.

Steve let out a laugh at her words and nodded, "Let me know what you think. Be sure to tell them I recommended you." He joked before he finished off his spaghetti. He was really excited that he and Mackenzie were getting along so well. He planned on asking her on another date if things ended up going well with her.

"I'll be sure to let them know. Maybe they'll give you a discount next time you come in or something." Mackenzie said with a slight laugh before popping another forkful of spaghetti into her mouth. It really was delicious, and that was coming from someone who was fifty percent Italian. She'd definitely have to keep this place in mind whenever she wanted good Italian food that wasn't her family's recipes. "When you aren't being set up on blind dates in my section of the diner, what do you like to do?" She asked him curiously.

Steve laughed before he took another bite of his food. When she asked about what he did in his spare time, he shrugged, "I work out...a lot." He laughed, "I mean I have a job, but it's kind of like an every once in a while job. Like very special occasions. So, in the free time between jobs I kind of help train these kids. Like I get them in better shape because they work with me as well, but they're new, so I help them out in getting used to the job and everything. Usually I work with them for a little while then I go work out with Natasha, Bucky, and Jules." He explained. Steve wasn't sure if he should lay on the whole part of the Avengers, saving the world, thing. So he told her the truth, the best he could, "I've been trying to get caught up on things. I've missed a lot recently. So, I have things I'm trying to teach myself. Using a phone is one of those things." Steve joked.

"So you're a personal trainer then?" Mackenzie asked curiously. He was being a bit vague despite his extensive explanation. She didn't know if there was a reason for that, and she didn't want to push him to talk too much if he didn't want to, but she had picked up on the vague nature of his explanation. It was kind of obvious really. "I think you have the phone thing down for the most part. You did manage to figure out how to call me after all." She said with a slight laugh.

Steve shrugged, "Not exactly. I mean in a sense I am for those specific people, but only them." He specified. He hated how vague he was being with her, but it was the first date and he didn't want to mess anything up by telling her that he was a ninety-five year old super solider that was part of the Avengers. He would wait until he knew he hadn't screwed anything up and that Mackenzie would be willing to go on more than one date with him. Steve laughed at her words, "I have had a little help getting adjusted, so I can't take all the credit." He joked.

Mackenzie nodded. His answer was specific but still somewhat vague yet again. She wasn't going to call him out on it though. This was only their first date. She wasn't expecting him to give her all of the nitty gritty details about his life in one go. If everything continued to go well, that would all come in time. She hoped that it would anyway. "You must have been overseas and out of contact with certain aspects of the world for a while if you needed help getting acclimated again."

Steve knew that he was still being vague with her and he felt really bad about that, but he didn't want to scare her away with the whole "First Avenger" thing and that he was currently almost a full century old. He nodded at her statement, "You could definitely say that again." He replied with a laugh, "Most of the time I was over in Germany." Steve added and smiled slightly.
