Caroline dragged a hand through her hair as she leant back against the wall behind the counter.

The day was slow, but then again there was rarely a pressing demand for films midday on a Wednesday. And with the increasing use of media streaming... well, she was anticipating getting made redundant any day now when the video store went under. Who even needed to rent dvds anyway?

The bright polo top she wore proclaimed her happy to help, and clashed horribly with her hair. But given the empty state on the shop, and her manager on his lunch break, she pretended to type at the till whilst scrolling through her phone.

Why Ryan was stuck on grunt work again he didn't understand. It's like the family didn't have the manpower to go back to their old leg breaking days when they broke legs to those who didn't pay their money back on time. It was time to break Ronny the Rat's legs at the video store he frequented to sell meth out the back. So in essence he was doing the neighborhood a favor.

He stepped into the store to see Ronny there trying to not make an ass of himself. He grabbed him and shoved him into the bathroom where for the next five minutes there was ungodly screaming. He walked out to see someone at the counter. "Hi." he said trying to see if he couldn't get her to forget he was there.

In a neighbourhood like this, it was usually best to ignore suspicious sounds, whatever they may be. Caroline ignored the screeches coming from the bathroom as she continued to text her friend about how dull her job was. She kept her head down until somebody spoke, jerking up to look at the man before her.

"... hi," she echoed back, voice wary. "Need anything?"

Ryan looked at her and smiled as he grabbed the first random DVD he could find. He walked up with a smile on his and handed her the DVD. "I guess I would like to rent this one." he told her as he slid the case across the counter.

Caroline shrugged a shoulder, picking up the case as the man pushed it towards her.

"Interesting choice," she commented, eyeing the cover then dipping below the counter to root through the basket of disks.

Ryan looked at her. She wasn't too bad to look at. He waited until she came back up. "You look bored. IS the movie rental business not all that's cracked up to be?" he asked her as he pulled out his wallet and looked at her.

"Well I can't say it's the most exciting thing I've ever done," Caroline commented as she straightened. She looked from the man to the bathroom and back again. "So... am I a witness to be rid of now or what? How do you sorts do things?"

Her gaze remained level as she looked at the male. She thought, deep down, maybe she should be scared. But really, what was there to do?

Ryan shrugged his shoulders as he looked at her. "I mean if you really want to rat me out for snapping a man's legs for selling meth to small children then I mean I guess." he chuckled. Ryan noticed two cops walk into the store. He leaned forward. "So I need you to help me get out of here." he whispered. "I'll make it worth your while." he told her.

Caroline raised an eyebrow.

"So you chose to break his legs rather than get him arrested or something? Is the law in your hands?" She sighed and shook her head. "Fine, go out the backdoor. Just... play along or something."

She smiled brightly at the man before her, leaning across the counter to kiss his cheek.

"It's sweet you came to pick me up, my shifts done in ten, meet me round back?"

Ryan shrugged. "I have a fucked up sense of justice." he told her as he blushed a little at the cheek kiss. "Sure thing honey. Meet you outside in ten." he told her as he stepped outside into the alley. He waited until she came outside for them to start walking off together.

Caroline walked with the man, shoving her hands deep into her pockets and sighing heavily.

"So, what happens now? I don't really... I don't really get how you people do things, you know? Do I get to go home, do you need to do some threats or... what do we do?"

Ryan saw two more cops walking down the street and he put a hand around her wrist. "Follow me inside." he told her as he stepped into the hide out where the smell of warm Italian cooking filled the air. "Welcome." he told her as the wives and girlfriends and other mob members came to meet the new person. "I'm sorry for this." he told her as they all rushed around her.

Caroline looked after the man, confused.

"I don't even know you're name and I- where are we? I have a home to go to, you know," she stood, bemused as people surrounded her, hugging her arms around herself self-consciously.

Ryan looked at her. "My particular family isn't trusting of friends. When I brought a woman through that door they think we are in a courtship. Play along and I'll do something." he told her as they were slowly sucked into the family room. "Hi everyone. Let's eat!" he said and all of a sudden the family moved to the kitchen.

"It would be easier to play along if I knew your name," Caroline muttered, tugging her jacket to cover her work polo more. "How long are you going to keep me here? For all you know I have someone waiting for me at home."

Ryan leaned over and whispered into her ear. "Ryan. Also I doubt it. If you did would you really walk home with some random guy you overheard break a drug dealers legs?" he asked her as he lead her into the dining room.

"Well, of course," Caroline said, keeping her voice low as she followed him. "If there's someone waiting for me, there'd be more chance of someone realising that I hadn't come back, so my absence would be noted sooner. It would probably actually be safer to follow you when there's someone to note my absence, than outright defy the guy who breaks legs, don't you think?"

Ryan shrugged and looked at her. "Meh, I meant you no harm. You hadn't done anything to piss me off so I would have left with my movie if the cops hadn't shown up." he told her.
