Wrong Choices

James Buchanan Barnes, was a Sargent in the 107th Infantry, best friend to Steve Rogers and known now as the Winter Soldier. After 70 plus years as then fist of Hydra. Bucky Barnes was finally free of their grasp, not entirely but he no longer has his programming and was on his way to recovery. Secluded in Wakanda thanks to his best friends Steve. He spent a few days under ice until King T’Challa had everything sorted out. Working on healing James from all this programming was no easy task but he knew his sister Shuri was the person to do the job.

James sat on an operating table and waited anxiously for Shuri to come by and start working on him. He sighed softly, looking at his hands wondering if this would work and how long the process would be. “Are you nervous Sargent?” He Heard the princess from the other side. He smiled weakly, “maybe just a little.” Shuri walked over and looked at him and placed her handbag on his shoulder, “it will be quick and painless I promise. I’m just waiting on my assistant and we’ll get started.”

Elle found herself trying to stay put od the spotlight, she didn’t want to be recruited by Tony Stark or be found by the government. She just wanted to be left alone. Elle wanted to help people who were kind and compassionate. She wanted nothing from the Accords. All Elle wanted was to help people, she found herself fighting off pirated at the moment. Healing people who needed healing and helping in any way she’s could.

Elle tried to keep a low profile so the Avengers wouldn’t find her, she didn’t want to be a part of that. She wanted to do her own thing and doing what she can on her terms. Elle was in the middle of a fight thinking that this might actually expose her even with her hood over her face. Maybe a mask should have been brought up.

Athena rushed into the lab where Shuri was, ready to start her day, "Sorry I'm late." She said to her friend as she stood next to her. Athena had been in Wakanda for a little over two years now. T'Challa had found her badly injured nearby after being attacked, and quickly brought her back to the Kingdom to get healed. She had ended up staying because she had no more family left and was on her own. She was able to start helping out by becoming the assistant to the Princess Shuri, and the rest was history. This was her family now and her home, "Good to see you, Sargent Barnes." She stated as she looked over at the man with a smile.

Athena had been there the day that Steve Rogers showed up with Bucky, asking T'Challa to help him by getting his memory back from Hydra. She never really got to talk to him, but she was present the day that he arrived, so she wasn't clueless about the task that they were given. Athena knew that if anyone would be able to help Bucky, it was Shuri. At such a young age, she was able to do so many amazing things and Athena was completely envious of the skill she possessed but loved the girl as if she was her own sister.

Steve was walking down the street, trying to keep his head down so nobody would recognize him. Though Bucky had told him that trouble always had this way of finding him, and Steve knew that was true. Steve stopped when he heard sounds of a struggle between two people. Steve tied to tell himself not to get involved, but he couldn't help himself. Next thing he knew, the guy had managed to pull a knife on him and he had managed to get a couple slices in, but what had really managed to get Steve was the off-guard stab the guy had managed to get in Steve's stomach. He normally was able to move on, but out of nowhere had come a girl and knocked out the guy who he was fighting with, "Wow, thanks." He said.

When he had next woke up, the girl was hovering over him, and she was concentrating on something, "What's going on?" He asked curiously. He looked down to see she was healing his wounds, "How are you doing that?" He questioned. He was trying to get a good look at her face, but she was managing to keep it covered somehow.

All the people of Wakanda were kind to Bucky and that surprised him. While the rest of the world had come to fear him here he was in a secluded nation feeling like he didn’t belong. They welcomed him however, that was the nature of T’Challa and his kingdom. He was very grateful for that. Bucky nodded to the young woman who helped Shuri with whatever the princess wanted. She had said hi to him a few times but Bucky seemed distracted most of the time.

Princess Shuri and her assistant Athena had showed him the kingdom once or twice and already Bucky had fallen in love with it. Wakanda was peaceful and no fear to be seen anywhere and that’s what Bucky loves about it. The scenery was the most beautiful too. “I can’t thank you enough for doing this for me,” he said to both ladies. Princess Shuri smiled politely at James, “anything to help better people and the world I’m there, right Athena?” She smiled. Bucky took a good look at Athena, “how are you doing?” He finally spoke up.

Elle didn’t like people who wee violent and looking for trouble so she did her best to put a stop to that. Only when necessary however, she knew violence wasn’t always the answer but she often had to defend herself and others. As soon as she had knocked the man down her attention to the blond man who was passing out. She hurried and helped him up, “let’s get you somewhere less crowded. It was dark so the police wasn’t going to be around much. Elle didn’t realize that man she had just helped was a wanted fugitive she hadn’t noticed him. She just wanted to help him.

As soon as she found her hiding spot she pulled the man into her room and had helped him out of the hose heavy clothes so she could really look at him. Since he passed out Elle quickly got to patching him up, this would take a while since the wound was a bit deep. SHe stopped the bleeding now she just had to work on closing the wound and healing it completely. Elle looked up when she heard him speak and went back to healing. “Your wound is deeper than I thought, I managed to stop the bleeding, just working on healing and closing the wound, I don’t have stitches I figured I could do it without. I need another hour or so” she sighed softly and pulled to take a small break. Getting up she grabbed a glass of water from the counter. Walking back she handed him a glass after sitting up, “try not to move too much until I finish up, to answer your question I’m just someone with abilities just doing my part to help.” She took a good look then Steve, finally realizing who he was. “You’re hiding out too huh?”

Athena smiled at Shuri's words before nodding, "Exactly." She replied before he spoke to her. She gave him a grin as she looked at his handsome face, "I'm doing very well actually. Thank you for asking, Sargent." She answered. She wasn't blind and clearly could see how handsome Bucky was, and he was very nice to her as well. She'd be lying if she said she didn't have the tiniest of crushes on him, and Shuri knew it too which is why the Princess teased her friend about it constantly. Athena tried not to think about it much for professional reasons, but now that she was helping Shuri fix Bucky's mind, the thought was kind of always on her mind, "I hope you're ready to get your mind back to normal." She said to the brunette man with a small smile.

Steve raised his eyebrow when she said she would need another hour. He was confused as to exactly what she was doing before she spoke about her abilities, "How did you get them?" He asked curiously. When she asked if he was hiding out as well, he nodded briefly, hoping that she didn't know who he was, but he figured she probably did. He wasn't exactly hidden when he was doing his part as an Avenger. Everyone knew who he was, "What are you hiding out for?" He questioned. Steve then realized he was asking her a bunch of questions, but didn't even know her name, "I didn't even get your name, I'm sorry."

Bucky smiled at the woman, “you can call me Bucky,” he nodded. He thought Athena was a beautiful woman, and sometimes he wanted to ask her out but, he was still a mess. He wasn’t the same person he used to be. Bucky had changed, it was obvious to his best friend Steve, who had changed as well. Bucky was less out going and liked keeping to himself, “ready as I’ll ever be,” he told both women.

Elle raises her head to stare into his piercing blue eyes, at first Elle was confused about what he was talking about. “I was experimented on by Strucker a few years ago, I managed to escape though.. I’m fine.” Elle sighed, “I don’t want to be captured and put in prison for having abilities, apparently that’s a thing now. I just want to lay low and help people.”Elle stared at her, not sure why she felt she could trust this man, •Elle.. and you’re Steve right?”

Athena smiled when he told her to call him Bucky, "Well then, Bucky, today is just going to be a short experiment. We don't want to subject you to too much at once." Athena said with a smile as she joined Shuri at the computer table. She was excited to kick things off with Bucky. She hoped that he was prepared to get his mind back. Athena was sure he was more than happy to finally get back to himself.

Steve shook his head at her words, "You won't be captured. You still have a choice whether or not to agree to sign the Accords or not, but if you choose not to, you have to retire. Which is currently why I'm in hiding." He replied. When she introduced herself before saying his name, he gave a small smile and nodded, "Yeah. That's me. It's nice to meet you Elle. Thank you for saving my life." He replied

Bucky looked between both women and nodded, “I understand, I’m just thankful to be getting rid of this programming.” Bucky sat there with one arm, not bothered by anything. He was happy in Wakanda, it was a beautiful country. So peaceful and he didn’t have to worry about anyone finding him. He knew well that’s T’challa would take care of people not finding him. Bucky followed Shuri’s instructions to lie on the table and just relax.

Elle frowned as she heard Steve talk about the Accords, “I don’t want any part of that, I don’t want the government on my back 24/7. That’s exactly why I’m hiding, they don’t know I exist. Yet anyway.” Elle smiled at Steve, “it’s a pleasure meeting you to Steve. “

Athena watched as Bucky got on the table and relaxed. Athena could tell that Bucky really wanted to be free of Hydra's reign and terror that he had endured for a good portion of his life. She knew of all of the terrible things they brainwashed him into doing. She knew they deprived him of an actual life because of constant freezing and bringing back they did with him.

Steve tried his best to smile at her while she healed him, "It's nice to meet you as well." He said lightly. He was really appreciative of her helping him even though she didn't even know him. Steve could understand where she was coming from in not wanting the government to know about her. Sometimes he wished that they didn't really know about him or any of his friends, so they could have a normal life again.

Bucky let out a nervous sigh as Shuri instructed for him to lay down as He did he closed his eyes and felt the anesthesia take over. Shuri began to work on his mind looking through decades of memories and programming. “Can you imagine what Sargent Barnes must have gone through..” she spoke as she worked. “One thing is for sure, Captain Rogers means a lot to James so we mustn’t touch those memories...” Shuri looked closer, “trying to find this programming might take a while Hydra did quite the number on him,”

Elle smiled softly at Steve, “the pleasure is all mine Cap” she nodded and continued to heal. “All right, you may be a little sore but I took care of any damage that was done and fixed any broken or damaged tissue, bones etcétera.” Elle stood and stretched her arms and legs, “I’m hungry I think I got some fruit, I’m sure you want to eat as well.”

Athena frowned at Shuri's words but shook her head in reply, "I could never imagine what he went through, Princess." She spoke softly as she assisted Shuri in the process. Athena couldn't help but stare at Bucky while he slept. He looked so relaxed and calm which was a complete turn around than usual. Usually, he looked very stressed and sad, no doubt from what HYDRA did to him, and Athena hated seeing him like that.

Steve sat up slightly with a small groan at the stiffness, but already felt ten times better than he had when Elle found him, "That sounds wonderful if you don't mind." He replied and stood up. He was very grateful for her helping him and now feeding him. He knew he would have to find a way to repay her. He wasn't sure what would have happened had she not been there to heal him.

Elle walked to her small kitchen area to find something to eat, it had been awhile since she’s healed someone like this, so it took a toll on her. She was tired and needed to rest, “all right, I’ve got peanut butter and jelly? I’d thats your thing. And quite a bit of fruit, help yourself.” Shrugging Elle pulled out some fruit, “so what were you doing out there? Besides the obvious, “

Shuri looked at the woman beside her as she worked, smirking, “you’ve bonded well with White Wolf haven’t you? You seem concerned, more than a doctor would be,,” she teased. “All right, it’s been a long working day, how about we take a break and bring him back. We’ve got most of the programming out”
